LEGO Game Boy proving to be a hit with video game fan community

There’s been a broadly positive response to the reveal of LEGO Super Mario 72046 Game Boy, especially when it comes to video game fans.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con witnessed a flurry of new LEGO set announcements, including the official reveal of 72046 Game Boy. The near 1:1 scale recreation of the classic Nintendo handheld console is a 421-piece model that will launch online and in stores on October 1, 2025, complete with two Game Paks and three lenticular screens.

While many in the LEGO community are already looking forward to picking up 72046 Game Boy, the set has also been getting plenty of mainstream media coverage and generally positive reactions from the video game fan community too.

The price is right

“I was surprised at the price,” said one Eurogamer commenter regarding 72046 Game Boy. “I was at least expecting £120 – £150 for it. I’d be down for this… might wait for a double VIP points day to get it.”

That sentiment was echoed by more commenters on the video game site, such as one fan who posted, “I really am TRYING to buy less things… but that looks lovely. And £55 for a LEGO set seems like a bargain… how conditioned we’ve become to £100+ pricing.”

Non-functionality highlighted

One aspect of the upcoming LEGO set that is being highlighted is its lack of actual functionality, although it’s highly-likely that some creative builders out there will eventually figure out a way to make one work.

“What the LEGO Game Boy set doesn’t do is actually play any games,” noted Polygon. “It also doesn’t feature any light or sound features. It’s simply there to be assembled and admired, in most cases wistfully.”

“It’s worth noting that, unlike some other sets, there are no light or sound features here, and you can’t actually play games on it,” IGN commented. “This is a set that’s meant to be displayed. To that end, it also includes a brick-built stand for the Game Boy replica, and another stand for whichever cartridge you don’t have slotted into the back of the device that’s being “played.”

72046 Game Boy will be released on October 1, 2025, priced at £54.99 / $59.99 / €59.99, with pre-orders for the LEGO Super Mario model now open.
