LEGO Ideas 40912 Sea Serpent GWP review

LEGO Castle fans may be feeding on scraps at the moment, but 40912 Sea Serpent feels like a feast during the famine. And it just might be the most sought-after GWP of 2026…

Available with orders above $180 / €180 (the UK threshold has yet to be confirmed) from July 7, this LEGO Ideas gift-with-purchase reimagines 1992’s 6057 Sea Serpent with modern design principles and minifigures. It’s based on a 250-piece concept by Damian Hallowell (HallowedBrick02), who came out on top in 2025’s ‘Twist of Nostalgia’ challenge to update a classic set for a new GWP.

And whether you’ve got fond memories of the original set or not, this is going to be a highly-coveted freebie for LEGO Castle fans. At 241 pieces there are some big changes from the version pitched, the most obvious of which is that fabric sail.

It’s one of three exclusive elements here and replaces the brick-built version in the Ideas submission, and it adds plenty of desirability to a set that might otherwise be relatively easy to piece together from existing pieces. It’s not the only thing to enjoy here, though: this is a pleasant build from top to bottom, and packs more than you might expect into its small footprint.

There’s a hidden cargo crate below deck, for example, and another in the stern, accessed by folding out the sides of the cabin – which is now built at angles using hinge plates, rather than squared away with a modular roof as per the original design. It’s a small change, but one that adds a lot of character to an otherwise simple vessel.

One big loss is the working rudders as proposed by fan designer Damian, which sets up 40912 Sea Serpent as a model intended more for display than play – without the steering column in the stern, this is essentially function-free. It’s a shame but likely won’t be a dealbreaker for many.

We drop down to two minifigures from the winning design’s three, and indeed the three Black Knights of the original 1992 set, but anyone hoping for some novelty here may be disappointed. The knights can be assembled entirely using existing parts, combining the Griffin Knight’s torso with dark blue rather than dark red arms.

That’s not necessarily surprising, though – the original faction wasn’t exactly visually distinctive in the same way as the Black Falcons (for example), with generic scale mail torsos. They were distinguished by their shields, and so it goes here, with two brand new prints of updated dragon motifs on the pointed shield introduced in the Legend of Zelda sets and since reused by the Serpent Knights.

Here’s hoping those make their way to Pick a Brick to enable us to build a bigger Black Knight army, but it’s never a guarantee for parts only included in gifts-with-purchase. The minifigures themselves will at least be relatively easy to recreate en masse via the Pick a Brick platform if you so please, which is the upside of their somewhat generic design.

Whether or not you decide to expand on 40912 Sea Serpent, though, it will be well worth buying something to get your hands on the set itself on July 7. $180 / €180 is a relatively tall order, but it’s still hard to see this being anything other than one of the most popular gifts-with-purchase of 2026. The aftermarket prices are going to be interesting…
