Latest LEGO Ideas model cracks the 10K formula

An incredibly complex and working version of an algorithmic machine is the latest LEGO Ideas fan design to make its way in to the third review of 2024.

One of the great things about the LEGO Ideas review process is the sheer diversity of fan-designed builds that are submitted each year. While many models are based on familiar licensed properties, others can be more basic or even wildly abstract in nature.

A case in point is the latest LEGO Ideas creation to make it into the third review of 2024, in the shape of Turing Machine – Working LEGO Computer. The complicated design is the brainchild of The Bananaman and was inspired by a real algorithmic computer invented by Alan Turing in 1936.

LEGO Ideas Turing Machine – Working LEGO Computer

The original device was intended to be a mathematical model of computation describing an abstract machine that manipulated symbols on a strip of tape according to a table of rules. The LEGO Ideas model attempts to do the same, with 2,900 pieces (many of which are Technic elements) combined to allow the brick-built gadget to actually function.

According to the fan designer, Turing Machine – Working LEGO Computer is a complex set that operates without an electric motor. Thanks to some clever engineering, the device can be played with, programmed and used to create theoretical models that are displayed as simple symbols.

Turing Machine – Working LEGO Computer joins 17 other fan creations battling it out to become physical sets at some point. We’ll have to wait and see if the latest submission performs well in the third review of 2024 as the months progress.
