LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog set designed for expansion as full theme rumoured

With rumours of a full LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme, the initial Ideas set’s expandable design might come in handy outside its intended purpose.

According to recent reports, 2023 will see the launch of a full LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme with six sets. With that in mind, the LEGO Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone model’s design may be perfect for what is rumoured to come. 

Rumour has it that five LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog builds are coming. That initial LEGO Ideas set had Technic pins and connection points on either end of each module to connect them or combine multiple copies of the set. 

However, with a dash denoting the set as Green Hill Zone rather than just 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog and these Technic connection points, these aspects of 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone could have been designed not just for multiple LEGO Ideas models, but also for different future Sonic sets too. 

It seems likely that a full LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme would venture beyond Green Hill Zone and according to our sources, 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone is scheduled to retire at the end of 2023.  

That could be evidence for and against this point, with the set potentially being available at the same time as the full rumoured theme but also leaving production in the same year to potentially make way for another Green Hill Zone creation.

Another thing to consider is the 18+ nature and build of 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone which may greatly differ from a full theme, similar to the biggest LEGO Super Mario models and the rest of the sets. Either way, you might be able to carry some elements of the initial build over to other models, again like how the larger Mario creations interact with the course-building system.

As always, remember that this is only a rumour until officially confirmed by the LEGO Group so take everything you’ve read with caution. At the time of writing, while the thought of a full LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme may be exciting, only 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone is official and available at the time of writing.
