LEGO Ideas The X-Files has been a 10-year long journey in the making

For the designer behind the upcoming LEGO Ideas The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There, it’s been a decade-long ride to see the set become a reality.

The LEGO Ideas team today revealed the winners of its two ‘90s-inspired IP challenges, The Next Chapter and The Opening Act. While Pidelium’s Wallace & Gromit model ultimately won the former contest, it was Brent Waller’s The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There that triumphed in the latter.

The 2,020-piece two-storey set is based on the fan-favourite show that debuted on the Fox network in 1993 and has proven to be the culmination of a 10-year long journey for its creator. Brent originally designed custom minifigures of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully back in 2015, even going so far as to get a photo of actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson holding their blocky characters to promote a previous LEGO Ideas submission.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe was a 650 playset that managed to drum up 10K LEGO Ideas supporters in 2021, but was ultimately rejected during the review process. In a recent Instagram post, Brent himself noted that the submission was apparently deemed ‘too mature’ for the LEGO Ideas platform, but that didn’t deter the designer from coming back this year with a new and updated submission.

The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There takes many of its cues from the previous LEGO Ideas model, such as the inclusion of the FBI agents’ iconic office, plus minifigures of Mulder, Scully, Assistant Director Walter Skinner and two grey aliens.

The good news for Brent and fans of the cult TV show is that The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There is now on course to become a physical LEGO Ideas set at some point in the future. Conspiracy theorists will no doubt have worked out that could mean it may arrive in 2026 or early 2027, but an official release date has yet to be announced.
