LEGO Insects looks good alone – but even better in this Vikings crossover

One display idea in particular leapt to mind when people first saw LEGO Ideas 21342 The Insect Collection – and now one builder has made it a reality.

When LEGO Ideas 21342 The Insect Collection was first revealed, fans of Japanese kaiju (a genre of media that depicts huge monsters, also known as kaiju) were quick to point out the possibilities of using the three insects for monster-style displays. Five months on from the set’s release in September 2023, someone has brought that idea to life – to great effect.

PriortotheFire took to reddit to share how they “found 21342 The Insect Collection to be a good addition to 21343 Viking Village”. This pairing of two LEGO Ideas sets, released one after another in the second half of last year, is an incredibly effective one. After all, most of the minifigures in 21343 Viking Village are already kitted out for battle.

The creative builder chose the mantis out of the trio of insects to attack the brick-built village – an apt choice seeing as the green bug is kitted out with guns and blades as some creative element repurposing.

It’s not only 21343 Viking Village that could work well for such a display. While sets that err on the fantastical side of things are probably best, other possible fun crossovers could include 10320 Eldorado Fortress or the soon-to-be-released 10332 Medieval Town Square. You could take a leaf out of Godzilla vs Kong and build a franchise crossover, adding some kaiju to the mix in 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage or create the worst day at the office ever in 21336 The Office.

The particular benefit of 21343 Viking Village is that there are multiple smaller buildings, providing what looks like a pretty sturdy base for the mantis, or one of the other bugs, to perch on, so that might be something to bear in mind when trying to recreate the effect for yourself.
