LEGO Marvel Milano blurred the lines between playset and UCS set in 2024

LEGO Marvel 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano sought to bridge the gap between play and display in 2024 – but does it succeed?

For years, the LEGO Group has typically had pretty clear lines where play and display is concerned. LEGO City? That's for play, with open sets packed full of interactive features that can be easily handled. LEGO Icons? That's where you find your display-centric builds, designed to be built and placed on a shelf as part of an eye-catching collection.

Even within licensed themes like LEGO Marvel, sets were designed with clear purposes in mind. There was space within the theme for huge, detailed display builds like 76269 Avengers Tower, alongside playsets like 76290 The Avengers vs. The Leviathan and a revolving door of mechs and construction figures.

In 2024, however, 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano came along and blurred those lines like never before. It straddles the gap between play and display, coming with a display stand and plenty of detail in its 2,090 pieces, but also incorporating play features like other display sets from the theme don't.

Here's a closer look at how well 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano manages to bridge that gap – and where it falls down.

Play requires stability

One non-negotiable for a playset is stability and sturdiness. You can't swoosh a ship around (yes that's the technical term) if you're worried a wing is going to fall off, or a minifigure is about to go flying somewhere it shouldn't.

76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano feels ready to take to the skies, combining hinges and layers of plates for a steadfastly sturdy build. All four minifigures, plus Groot, can also fit inside, so there's no man left behind when you take it off the display stand and want to play around again.

The familiar silhouette of the Milano has been rendered faithfully, with the base of the body shaped perfectly to settle comfortably in hand. Picking up LEGO sets of over 2,000 pieces can often be a stressful endeavour but the balance of the ship has been carefully crafted that it doesn't feel too heavy or unstable to hold, even in one hand.

A detail-filled interior

The top of the ship can easily lift away – although is secured by some studs so you don't need to worry about it slipping off – revealing a detail-packed interior. As noted before, there's plenty of space for all the minifigures and a dedicated spot for Groot, although he can perch anywhere you can find a stud really.

Special care has been given to ensure that all accessories have their own spot too, with brackets for Drax's knives and Quill's guns. A common LEGO pet peeve is having random accessories and side builds left over, which can get lost when it comes to playsets and looks cluttered for display ones. 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano neatly sidesteps the issue in both cases by providing enough space for storage, without compromising on design.

One drawback to the interior that does create an obstacle for play, however, is the ceiling beam along the back. While the front of the ship is very easily accessible, the back is much less so – and that's where a lot of iconic scenes take place.

When trying to place any minifigures towards the back of the ship, you either need the smallest, most nimble fingers in the world or a set of tweezers to securely place your minifigures. The latter is not exactly conducive for spontaneous, imaginative play, meaning that a large portion of the seemingly roomy interior is virtually inaccessible.

The pictures above, for example, are attempting to recreate the scene where Drax interrupts a tender moment between Peter and Gamora during Avengers: Infinity War, crunching on Zarg-nuts while they discuss the impending threat of Thanos. There's not enough room for both Peter and Gamora to stand at the back, meaning you have to arrange the three characters awkwardly around the central block.

Presumably, the ceiling beam and the pillar are required for the stability of 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano – which is a huge advantage, it can't be denied. However, it does leave the interior with some accessibility limitations that mean play possibilities inside the ship are limited.

Features that beg to be played with

On the other hand, these interior limitations are more than made up for when it comes to what's possible on the exterior. If you can see a wing, it's posable, with various different combinations that give 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano its unique bird-like outline. The engines can also be posed using ball joints that allow for enormous range.

When sitting on its display stand, 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano is angled forward, as if about to take flight. That also offers a clear view into the cockpit, so you can easily see all the minifigures while it's on display.

The dynamic angle practically begs for the ship to be lifted off the stand and it's an incredibly satisfying ship to whoosh around (another technical term). The streamlined silhouette that makes it believably fast on-screen also lends it well to dynamic play when you have it in hand.

76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano can sit on its stand, on the floor, or fit smoothly into your hand. However you want to engage with it, it has the sturdiness and the detail to make for a fulfilling experience. If the only letdown is the interior, that's a compromise we're willing to make for a LEGO Marvel set that otherwise perfectly straddles the gap between play and display.
