LEGO Marvel’s ongoing price spirals have got us nervous about 2025

LEGO Marvel has a long history of surprising choices when it comes to price and one upcoming price has got us eyeballing some 2025 sets with trepidation.

With official prices now confirmed for a trio of LEGO Marvel Captain America: Brave New World sets, there’s one in particular that stands out – and not in a good way. 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle is priced at £49.99 / $54.99 / €54.99 for just 223 pieces. Admittedly that includes a big-fig Red Hulk but that doesn’t really account for such a steep price for what you get.

Seeing as 76232 The Hoopty and 76281 X-Men X-Jet’s high prices still fresh in the back of LEGO Marvel fans’ minds, it seems like the trend of overpriced LEGO Marvel sets isn’t slowing down. Looking ahead to 2025, that’s got us feeling nervous about some releases in particular.

For example, 76316 Galactus vs The Fantastic Four is said to come out in April, with a rumoured price of $54.99 for 384 pieces. While that’s not quite as egregious as 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle, it comes pretty close. Looking at similarly priced sets in other licensed themes, like LEGO Star Wars 75387 Boarding the Tantive IV and LEGO Disney 43217 ‘Up’ House?, you get a lot more for the same budget.

In the case of the rumoured 76316 Galactus vs The Fantastic Four, it’s the only set so far that’s expected to accompany the upcoming Fantastic Four release. Like 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle, it will feature one larger character in the form of Galactus. Of course, Galactus is on a different scale to Red Hulk but the similar price and only marginally higher piece count could mean that the 2025 set could follow the same blueprint.

Alternatively – and hopefully – Galactus will be represented only in part, perhaps through a brick-built head or hand. This would be the most accurate way to represent a creature of Galactus’ scale, able to devour worlds but, even then, the 384 pieces don’t seem big enough to do such a concept justice.

Indeed, the trend in LEGO Marvel to overprice sets that are ultimately underwhelming doesn’t bode well for the 2025 set, or the theme in general. The trend dates all the way back to 2016 and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Mid-range sets in other themes, even licensed ones like LEGO Star Wars, usually feature some sort of interactive play features and at least one tempting minifigure – characteristics that are missing from revealed LEGO Marvel sets.

Of course, we’ll reserve judgment until we actually see the LEGO Marvel 2025 sets – but perhaps this is a sign to measure expectations when it comes to certain high price, low piece count sets.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
