LEGO NINJAGO designer details the NINJAGO part aesthetic
LEGO NINJAGO’s new parts all share similar design cues, and a designer for the theme has shared why its elements need to fit this language.
From minifigure weaponry to giant blades wielded by mechs, LEGO NINJAGO’s theme-specific parts all have a similar aesthetic, and now we know why this strategy is so essential for the range.
Senior designer for LEGO NINJAGO, Dimitrios Stamatis, has shared more insight into the design of new NINJAGO parts and the cohesive language they share, speaking to Bricks by Mind.
“This is more about what novelty can come from a wave,” states Dimitrios when asked about the new wisp piece in the summer 2025 NINJAGO sets and the creation of new NINJAGO parts.
“We had situations where it was very deliberate, like when we did the Hydro Bounty in Seabound with that new blade, because we felt that the old element was too generic, and sometimes designs get a bit older.

“You ask if we can do something that’s more ‘NINJAGO’, so you have to spread it throughout the sets to create points of a similar design aesthetic. Things are so different between a car and a mech, but you can find the points where this is a cohesive line of NINJAGO parts. It’s the same for the bad guys when they have a specific look – you do it with colour and you do it with elements.”
By creating subtle similarities between elements used in NINJAGO, it intrinsically links any sets that use the element to NINJAGO. This is why you won’t find many NINJAGO blade pieces outside of the theme. They’re not exclusive to NINJAGO, but need to be handled with care when they do appear in other themes. For instance, the Seabound blade piece also appears in Monkie Kid’s 80065 Erlang’s Celestial Mech.

“It comes down to expression, and that’s why the design cues for the big climbing hook came from that original blade from Seabound. We try to create cohesive and multi-use parts so you can use them, see it and recognise that it’s NINJAGO. It creates the idea of the NINJAGO aesthetic.”
With the knowledge of this LEGO NINJAGO aesthetic, look out for similar design cues in any other new elements that surface in the theme in the future. For now, you can find a variety of new NINJAGO pieces in the summer 2025 sets, available now in most regions or launching on August 1 in the US.
