LEGO Fortnite NINJAGO update reveals real-life versions of the ninja, and it’s… unsettling

What would LEGO NINJAGO’s minifigures look like in real life? It’s the question you never wanted answering, but Fortnite has done it anyway. Thanks, Fortnite.

LEGO Fortnite Odyssey’s NINJAGO: Rise of the Ninja update has just gone live around the world, revealing the regular Fortnite skins for Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane (which accompany their regular LEGO Fortnite minifigure skins) and thus what these characters would look like in real life. Their masked-up versions are just about fine, but take the masks away and we’re not sure we needed to see that.

The latest LEGO Fortnite update celebrates NINJAGO’s 15th anniversary in 2026, so these are characters most of us have spent a lot of time with between sets, the accompanying TV series and even 2017’s The LEGO NINJAGO Movie. Seeing them realised in human form feels a bit like watching your favourite sports team mascot take off their costume to reveal the sweaty person underneath. The illusion is broken.

Over on the NINJAGO subreddit, fans are getting a little more specific with their criticism. One person is taking issue with Kai’s hair being pushed back and Zane’s pants being rolled up; another calls the masks out for being too slim and tight; and someone’s even taking umbrage with the ninja having generic designs rather than being based on a specific season of the show.

Some NINJAGO fans are vibing with the Fortnite skins though, particularly Zane and Cole, while Jataaka says that besides Zane’s flat-top hair, ‘everything else exceeded my expectations’.

Landing somewhere in the middle with a little bit of perspective is Budget_Monitor969, who says: “Okay, let’s be honest, many will be happy about the skins, but we know it’s not 100% canon. The characters were made so that everyone could create their own interpretation of them. For me, this is the Fortnite canon, not the official version.”

NINJAGO: Rise of the Ninja is available to play now in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey. Kai is included with the Fortnite LEGO pass, while Cole, Zane and Jay’s skins are available to purchase individually or in a bundle for additional V-Bucks.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
