The LEGO Group plans to ramp up its solar capacity in 2025 as part of its ongoing environmental efforts to be a more sustainable company.
After announcing plans to build a dedicated off-site solar park near its headquarters in Billund back in 2023, the LEGO Group has, through this and other initiatives, increased its solar capacity by 61% globally over the past two years. Looking to the future, the company has still higher goals to meet, with plans to increase by 72% by the end of 2025.
To meet this target, the plan is to triple capacity in?Nyíregyháza, Hungary, where installation work has already begun on new panels in both ground and rooftop parks. In addition the new Vietnam factory is set to open this year with over 12,400 rooftop solar panels. This will also be a location for the LEGO Group to test new solar options, including battery storage.
Last but not least, the new 80MWp solar park in Billund is on track for completion in 2028, following negotiations with local energy providers. The new solar park will have a peak capacity that matches peak demand, covering all the energy consumption across official LEGO sites in Billund.
"We know the environment is one of children’s biggest concerns and we want to play our part in building a more sustainable future for each new generation of children," said the company in a statement. "We cannot do this alone, and we encourage a collective effort to ensure progress."
