How to get a LEGO Pokémon minifigure on day one for a fraction of the price (technically)

You can own one of the most sought-after LEGO Pokémon minifigures on release day for less than £5 – but there’s a catch.

The LEGO Group has announced five new LEGO Pokémon sets arriving this year, with the first-ever LEGO Pokémon minifigures making their debut in 72154 Iconic Trainer Moments Poké Ball.

The set includes three minifigures: Red, Professor Oak and a Picnicker. All three are likely to be highly sought after from day one, particularly Red and Professor Oak, given their importance to the original Pokémon games.

However, fans hoping to add Red to their collection won't necessarily need to pay the full set’s £229.99 / $299.99 / €249.99 price tag.

That's because a much cheaper version of the iconic Pokémon Trainer will launch on the same day.

Launching October 1 is 854332 Red Keyring, priced at just £4.99 / $5.99 / €5.99. It features the same Red minifigure as the one included in 72154 Iconic Trainer Moments Poké Ball, letting you own the iconic Generation I Pokémon protagonist for more than £200 less.

There is one catch, though. As with all LEGO keyrings, the minifigure is permanently attached to a metal chain and has a hole drilled through the top of its head to secure the fitting.

If you don't mind those compromises, it's an incredibly affordable way to own one of the theme's most sought-after minifigures.

If you'd rather experience the full 2,339-piece display, 72154 Iconic Trainer Moments Poké Ball launches on October 1 for £229.99 / $299.99 / €249.99. Joining it on shelves the same day is 40868 Up-Scaled Red Minifigure, priced at £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99.
