LEGO Shrek community reactions: ‘Nightmare fuel,’ ‘weird’ and ‘grotesque’

Community reactions to the recently-revealed LEGO Shrek sets have been typically divisive, with many heaping plenty of scorn on the movie models.

The LEGO Group pulled back the curtain on two upcoming LEGO Shrek sets this week, both of which represent what are said to be ‘just the beginning’ of more builds arriving from the new theme at some point. As usual, the wider LEGO community has weighed in with its thoughts on the DreamWorks Animation builds and the response has been just as divisive as you might imagine.

“Yeah, I don’t know why, but this looks weird. It doesn’t look bad, but weird,” stated uezocket on Reddit regarding 72423 Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots. “This set is grotesque,” added Aromatic_Student_221, with lost_scotsman chiming in to say, “Sorry, but nope. That’s nightmare fuel for me.”

Some in the community specifically noted the odd shape of the ogre’s face, as well as the scale of the LEGO set’s Puss in Boots minifigure, particularly when compared to the rest of the buildable characters in 72423 Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots.

“I think this would’ve been much better if they fixed the upper cheeks beside the nose,” posted AlfalfaOk4584 on Reddit, “It’s a little bit jarring of a transition between both the top and bottom.”

“Maybe it’s been too long since I watched, but Puss as a mini fig seems too small,” said Redditor bi-cycle. “That’s more the size I would expect from the Gingerbread Man.”

“I’m sure it was just to have Shrek and Donkey at that scale to make them look right,” replied coltweest on the same thread, “and decided inaccurate scale [for Puss in Boots] was worth it.”

It’s not all been negative comments regarding the LEGO Shrek builds though, with some praising the long-awaited arrival of the DreamWorks Animation characters in LEGO BrickHeadz form at least, in the shape of 40923 Shrek, Donkey & Gingy Figures.

“This is my favourite movie ever,” exclaimed king_dylan_01 on Instagram. “I’m so excited for this LEGO set to come out.” That sentiment was echoed by Andrew Barnick over on New Elementary who noted, “The goblet in lime green (used for BrickHeadz Shrek’s iconic cone-shaped ears) is a fun returning element – last used almost 10 years ago in one of the DC Mighty Micros sets!”

You’ll be able to decide for yourself about the upcoming 72423 Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots and 40923 Shrek, Donkey & Gingy Figures when The LEGO Shrek sets launch on June 1, 2026, with pre-orders for both models now live.
