LEGO Speed Champions 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1 review

Williams Racing finished next-to-last in 2024 but can its LEGO Speed Champions 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1 counterpart do better?

Williams Racing dropped a place in 2024 but the team’s self-confessed focus is on the years ahead. However, LEGO Speed Champions 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1 captures its car and livery in 2024, a little slice of the team’s most recent history.

How well does Williams blue translate into a LEGO Speed Champions set? Let’s take a look at 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1 close-up.

Don’t look at the intake

The darker colours that cover most of 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1 contrast nicely with the brighter orange colours from the stickered branding, just as it does in real life for some satisfyingly crisp aesthetics. However, the fact that the Duracell battery on the top of the car draws the eye does bring into focus the fact that the proportions of the LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 cars are not quite right.

It’s easy to skim over in most of the other cars but with 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1, the Duracell sponsorship is much larger and more prominent than it is on the real-life race car. It admittedly looks good and is as clever of an ad placement as it is in reality – but it does bring the flaws of the LEGO Speed Champions wave into clearer focus.

Nonetheless, at this scale, the level of detail in the majority of the cars is still impressive. A one-to-one scale would be virtually impossible and the look of 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1 is still a gratifying one.

Sloped pieces succeed where fiddlier builds can’t

Aerodynamics have been hit and miss with the LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 wave – but with 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1, it’s a slam dunk. That comes from a combination of cleverly aligned sloped elements, immaculately recreating the engine intake from every angle and clever use of tapered stickers and designs to lean into those angles.

The triangular stickers on the main body, for example, force the eye to follow the trajectory of the slopes, making them feel even more angular and smooth than they actually are. It’s a clever bit of visual design that means 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1 looks like the fastest brick-built car on the wave – even if that doesn’t quite translate in reality.

Minimalist never looks boring

Some of the flashier cars, like 77246 Visa Cash App RB VCARB 01 F1 and 77245 Aston Martin Aramco F1 AMR24, appear to capture accuracy in favour of flashy colours (and avoiding paying for a new and more true-to-life colour). For 77249 Williams Racing FW46 F1, it’s one of the more drab colours from the wave that you might think means it falls down in looks – but it’s exactly the opposite.

As noted above, the contrast between the bodywork and the sponsors makes all the colours, light and dark, pop. Not only is it true to what Williams looked like on track in 2024, but it’s an on-brand representation of the team that pays tribute to its long-running history in Formula 1. With a lot of Williams fans having stuck around for the long haul, if you’re looking for a way to display your team pride, this LEGO Speed Champions model is a worthy option.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
