75434 K-2SO is this summer’s best LEGO Star Wars set

Not every LEGO Star Wars buildable character can be a winner, but try telling that to 75434 K-2SO, which might just be the best one yet.

Fresh from Andor Season 2 and less-fresh from 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes 75434 K-2SO, a 40cm-tall brick-built display model of the sassiest droid this side of Scarif. Congratulations: you are being given the chance to buy the summer’s best LEGO Star Wars set.

LEGO Star Wars 75434 K 2SO review 1 683x1024

For every questionable buildable LEGO Star Wars Chewbacca and Wicket the Ewok there’s a much more satisfying and faithful C-3PO and K-2SO, and what’s telling in those examples – plucked from an ever-increasing number released over the past few years – is that bricks are much better suited to droids than organic characters.

But that’s not to say pulling these off is any easier, because while they may be mechanical these droids from a galaxy far, far away still have a particular presence and stature that must be captured to offer a properly convincing version of their respective character in LEGO form. What’s most impressive about 75434 K-2SO, just as it was with 75398 C-3PO last year, is how well the designers have recreated the droid’s specific posture.

LEGO Star Wars 75434 K 2SO review 5 683x1024

It’s what gives K-2 so much character in universe (beyond Alan Tudyk’s fantastic delivery), from his disproportionately long limbs to his slight forward tilt in standing position. That’s been captured here in the same way the LEGO Star Wars designers managed to recreate Threepio’s upright posture in 2024, and it goes a long way to selling the idea that this is specifically K-2SO.

Also central to any buildable character, though – perhaps even more so than the posture and proportions – is the head, which is inevitably where your eye is first drawn. It’s why Chewbacca in particular was so criticised at launch, because the rest of the set was writing cheques his face couldn’t cash. The same isn’t true for K-2.

While there was some discussion when he was first revealed around the particular solution for the eyes, it’s one that’s very easy to accept in person, and the 1×2 grille piece cleverly built in upside down for the mouth is spot on.

There’s a lot of clever building here from top to, well, if not quite the bottom, at least knee height. K-2’s slender calves are relatively straightforward, mainly because there’s not a lot of room to work with, but from the knees on up things get really interesting. While other LEGO Star Wars summer 2025 sets find fresh ways to compromise in builds that never previously had to, 75434 K-2SO successfully skirts around every particular shape and angle of this on-screen character in a way that feels simultaneously smartly engineered and effortless.

It makes for a set that’s admittedly a little bit fiddly to put together in places, although in this age of tiny pieces for maximum detail, what LEGO set isn’t? And when the results look this good, it’s hard to argue with the process. There’s reasonable articulation where you’d expect it too, in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers and even the neck, although the laws of gravity dictate that you won’t be posing his legs in any position other than ‘locked into the base’.

It’s all rounded out with a printed info plaque and a K-2SO minifigure (handy if you aren’t picking up 75399 Rebel U-wing Starfighter), and for the size and detail of the finished model you won’t find much to grumble about for the price, either. This includes more pieces than 75413 Republic Juggernaut for a little more than half the price, and feels even more substantial than that set when all’s said and done.

You could easily have seen the LEGO Group pricing this one at £100 or more in the current climate of LEGO Star Wars sets, so seeing it come in at only £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99 means it’s realistically the easiest (and perhaps only) set in the new wave to justify buying day one.

LEGO Star Wars 75434 K 2SO 75379 R2 D2 75398 C 3PO comparison 2 1024x777

As the latest in a series of buildable droids from the LEGO Star Wars team, there are already plenty of suitable display companions out there for 75434 K-2SO. Chief among those are last year’s 75379 R2-D2 and 75398 C-3PO, who both sit favourably next to the Imperial Security Droid – and who also make K-2 look even better value by comparison, given he’s the cheapest of the lot. His skinny legs and height are obviously doing a lot of heavy lifting there, mind.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
