LEGO Star Wars minifigure suggests designers are more open to game

A teased LEGO Star Wars minifigure suggests that the LEGO designers are more open to the Star Wars Jedi games than previous comments posit.

The new LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary video recently shared online features a few minifigures that have yet to be released physically, including Cal Kestis based on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. While we do not know for certain whether this minifigure will be released physically, it wouldn’t be the first LEGO Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order content.

75335 BD-1 was released in 2022 and retired in 2023, including a brick-built BD-1 based on the first game as well as a minifigure-sized depiction of the droid. Not only will this retired set pair well with the potential Cal Kestis minifigure, but it’s worth remembering some comments from designers Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Michael Lee Stockwell and Madison O’Neill regarding 75335 BD-1.

“We thought the content of the game was cool, so were immediately drawn to it, after release,” said Michael speaking to Brickset regarding the new model and the game itself.

“BD-1 in particular is just perfectly suited to our series of brick-built droids, especially since we could build him at almost life-size, which is always an attractive prospect,” continued Madison. “Whenever there is something well-received by the community, including something relatively unexpected, we are always open to responding to fans’ wishes.”

While The Book of Boba Fett and the line of brick-built droids provided enough justification for 75335 BD-1, more models inspired by the game didn’t seem quite as possible at the time of the interview.

“Video games present different challenges to the movies and television shows because their age ratings can affect the products we release,” Michael explained to Brickset in another interview. “We have a much greater understanding of what [the age rating] will mean in the context of movies than we do with video games. We know roughly what the level of violence might be, for example, whereas video games can be more unpredictable in that regard.”

These comments posit that further models based on the Star Wars Jedi games may not have been as feasible as 75335 BD-1, applying to a minifigure of BD-1’s companion along with them. Thankfully, that no longer appears to be the case, at least digitally.

Whether the minifigure has been created specifically for the video or could appear physically in the future has yet to be officially confirmed. Still, the existence of an official design for a Cal Kestis minifigure five years after the game was released proves that things have changed since 75335 BD-1 at the LEGO Group.

The video has many other interesting minifigures to analyse, including one that has caught the eye of an Ahsoka star. While 75335 BD-1 has retired, those planning on finding a copy secondhand can read our review by clicking here to see what to expect.

It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes.
