LEGO teases ‘surprises’ for Mario Day 2024: ‘Something is coming’

The LEGO Group is teasing a surprise reveal for Mario Day 2024, in line with previous Mario Day reveals including Princess Peach and Dry Bowser.

March 10 has long been the LEGO Group and Nintendo’s favourite day to reveal new sets, characters and products – because March 10 is MAR10, or MARIO Day, get it? – and it looks like it’s going to keep the Mario party going in 2024. A new video that’s just gone live on the official LEGO YouTube channel proclaims that ‘something is coming’ for Mario Day in 2024.

The six-second clip teases the start of the LEGO Super Mario Day stream, which will presumably go live on March 10, before it’s interrupted by a loud clang. The screen cuts to black, the host asks ‘how did they get in?’ and a tagline reads: “Surprises are coming your way!”

That all sets the scene for the introduction of another new character (or characters) for the LEGO Super Mario theme. But if recent rumours are to be believed, this summer’s sets will see something of a soft reboot for the range, replacing the three Mario, Luigi and Peach starter packs with new and updated versions. And the course-building expansion packs are so far rumoured to include only familiar enemies for the trio to tackle.

Headlining the summer 2024 LEGO Super Mario wave is – who else – Bowser, who’s said to be arriving by railway in 71437 Bowser’s Train. The video clip could well be referring to the King of the Koopas (the answer to the host’s question might just be ‘by train’), but also rumoured for this summer are King Boo and Wiggler, so it could be either of those too.

Or it could be someone completely different. We’ll presumably find out on March 10 when the full stream drops. I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
