LEGOLAND Shanghai opens as biggest LEGOLAND park ever
The world’s biggest LEGOLAND resort is now open as LEGOLAND Shanghai welcomes guests with unique attractions and a Monkie Kid land.
LEGOLAND Shanghai has finally opened after years of construction, bringing the world’s biggest LEGO theme park to audiences in China with a huge opening ceremony. Representatives from the Shanghai and Jinshan Governments, Merlin Entertainments, the LEGO Group, and New Jinshan Investment Group were all in attendance, alongside a huge crowd of excited guests.
“Our purpose at Merlin Entertainments is to bring people together to create memorable experiences for families around the world,” said Fiona Eastwood, chief executive officer of Merlin Entertainments.
“Today, we are taking that to the next level, with the opening of LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort, our first LEGOLAND Resort in China, the second biggest theme park market in the world. This milestone represents a major step towards our ambition to be the global leader in branded entertainment destinations.
“From the first sketches to the final LEGO brick, this resort is the result of years of vision, collaboration, and passion and is a testament to the dedication of our teams and the unwavering support of all our partners.”
LEGOLAND Shanghai will be celebrating the opening with a grand opening week event from July 5 to 13, where guests can enjoy themed decorations, immersive experiences, and exclusive offers. The opening of LEGOLAND Shanghai has been a long time coming, and it demonstrates an evolution of the familiar LEGOLAND foundations, introducing several new attractions and experiences, such as the world’s biggest minifigure in a massive roller coaster.
That’s not to mention the immersive Monkie Kid land with restaurants, a show and multiple attractions, many of which can be experienced in a new fly-through video. Comparing it to any of the other LEGOLAND resorts reveals just how different Shanghai’s new park is, especially with the indoor Miniland with a customisable environment.

“LEGOLAND Shanghai will be an integral part of the LEGO ecosystem in China and a great addition to our retail network and brand events, enhancing the immersive and interactive LEGO play experiences for our customers,” commented Niels B. Christiansen, president and chief executive officer at the LEGO Group.” I look forward to LEGOLAND Shanghai becoming a new cultural landmark for family interaction and bringing unique joy to all LEGO fans in China and beyond.”
LEGOLAND Shanghai is open now in Fengjing, Jinshan district, Shanghai, China, and construction started on November 17, 2021.
