Lotus ad sparks LEGO Technic 1:8 car speculation

A new ad for the Lotus Emira has sparked speculation around this summer’s rumoured 1:8-scale LEGO Technic car.

The LEGO Group’s biennial Technic supercar subtheme is due a new addition in 2026, and indeed the rumour mill suggests that’s exactly what’s coming in July. There’s no word yet on exactly which car might join 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, 42083 Bugatti Chiron, 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 and 42172 McLaren P1 in the line-up, but there are plenty of potential candidates – including the Lotus Emira.

Attention has shifted to this particular sports car, which is planned to be the British manufacturer’s final model with an internal combustion engine, thanks to a new ad Lotus has just dropped on Instagram. The reel emphasises the ‘feel’ of the car by driving it over a yellow 2×4 LEGO brick, accompanied by buzzwords like ‘steering’, ‘response’ and ‘connection’.

2×4 bricks aren’t the regular currency of LEGO Technic, but the top comment on the reel – from adriiiaaa_hs – theorises that a ‘1:8-scale Emira’ could be on the cards. It’s currently racked up 435 likes and at least one other commenter says they had the exact same thought, so while there’s every chance it’s just wishful thinking, it’s at least a wish that hundreds of LEGO fans share.

The Emira would mark a completely new addition to the 1:8 subtheme too, which has so far avoided repeating manufacturers, and the LEGO Group has an existing relationship with Lotus thanks to LEGO Speed Champions. But there are plenty of other credible candidates for this summer’s rumoured set too – if it exists at all, and remember all rumoured info should be taken with a grain of salt – including the Koenigsegg Agera and Aston Martin Valhalla. Check out a couple more ideas here.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
