More details on rumoured LEGO modular building 2023 GWP

The LEGO Group is said to be launching another themed gift-with-purchase for next year’s rumoured modular building – but it’s bad news for anyone hoping to pick up the set on day one.

Currently thought to consist of a jazz club and pizzeria, the next modular building is rumoured to follow the subtheme’s usual pattern of launching on January 1. The LEGO Group is apparently also establishing another tradition by introducing a complementary gift-with-purchase in the form of a pizza delivery van, following in the footsteps of last year’s 40532 Vintage Taxi, which was designed to accompany 10297 Boutique Hotel.

Just as that freebie actually arrived on shelves almost a full month after its parent set, however, so too will 2023’s mystery gift-with-purchase debut in late January or early February – at least according to Promobricks. If that’s true, the set would presumably be intended to convince hesitant consumers to take the plunge on the newest modular building – which makes sense, but would also force early adopters to place a second order to secure the thematic GWP.

It’s worth remembering too that 40532 Vintage Taxi required a spend of £200 / $200 / €200 to acquire, while 10297 Boutique Hotel originally retailed for £174.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 – so buying that set alone wasn’t actually enough to reach the spend threshold. That might not be the case in 2023, however, as 10312 is said to retail for €229.99. That means we’re probably looking at £199.99 in the UK, or $229.99 in the US.

The LEGO Group has previously been inconsistent with giving away GWPs at a penny under the threshold, so you might still have to add a Collectible Minifigure or keyring to your order in the UK, but it’s still a better situation than 2022. That said, it’s also seemingly a consequence of the LEGO Group’s recent price increases – that expected price tag is also the new price for 10297 Boutique Hotel – so it’s not exactly a win for the consumer.

We’ll find out more when the LEGO Group unveils its next modular building. For now, all rumours around the 2023 addition to the LEGO Icons subtheme – and any corresponding gifts-with-purchase – should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
