More printed seats are coming to the LEGO Speed Champions line

The upcoming LEGO set 76917 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GTR (R34) will offer impressive detailing both inside and out, which bodes well for the theme going forward.

While an avalanche of LEGO set reveals have dropped recently, an upcoming release in the LEGO Speed Champions line has proven particularly interesting. 76917 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GTR (R34) is inspired by the Fast and Furious film franchise, bringing us the very first Brian O’Conner in LEGO form.

Of course, the car itself is the star attraction – and it’s already mixing things up with its external decoration. The set introduces decorated wheel arches to Speed Champions sets, ensuring that exterior liveries are as accurate as they can be.

However, that attention to detail appears to be extending to the inside of the car as well. In an interview with the RacingBrick YouTube channel, LEGO designer Chris Stamp has shared a closer look at the car’s interior.

“We’re including decorated seats like we did on the [76902 McLaren Elva], because the racing seat is quite iconic to this car”, Stamp says. “When you see Brian in the car it’s not just the exterior that’s all blue and grey, but it’s also the interior, so we’ve tried to capture that as well”.

What’s particularly special about this seating option is that it’s printed – which is notable when we consider that a lot of Speed Champions detailing is produced with stickers. The arrival of a second Speed Champions set with printed seats also indicates that we could be seeing a similar level of detail in Speed Champions sets going forwards, whether they’re licensed or not.

That said, while the level of interior detail will (hopefully) continue to climb, that doesn’t mean we’ll get printed seats on a regular basis. The inclusion of printed elements in these sets appears to have been driven by the iconic nature of these particular vehicles; most Speed Champions car will likely use unprinted tiles to suggest upholstery instead.

Even so, it’s an encouraging step for Speed Champions to take – and we look forward to seeing what 2023 brings for the rest of the theme. 76917 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GTR (R34) hasn’t appeared on LEGO.com as yet, although initial information suggests it’ll be available on February 28 for €24.99.
