Nine details in LEGO Ideas Twilight House that fans will love

Whether you’re Team Edward or Team Jacob, there are plenty of Twilight references to eat up in LEGO Ideas 21354 Twilight: The Cullen House.

While 21354 Twilight: The Cullen House is based on a real and architecturally impressive building, most people looking at it will instantly be transported back to Forks, Washington – perhaps for the first time since being a teenager. The Twilight franchise came at the fever pitch of fantasy romance books and movies, centred around a teenage girl who ends up falling in love with one or sometimes two mythical creatures, often trapped in the body of a teenage boy.

In Edward Cullen’s case, he’s been 17 years old for a while, hiding the dark secret that he and his adoptive family are all vampires. Their home, with its open-plan structure and glass windows, is the only place they can be themselves and as such is where a lot of the action takes place.

The LEGO Group has adapted that location into its latest LEGO Ideas set, originally created by Nick Micheels and launching on February 1. As with all LEGO Ideas sets, there are references to the fan designer, with Nick’s birthday on the truck’s license plate and a tribute to his hometown of Sacramento in the landscape wall décor sticker on the ground floor.

However, if you’re wondering just how much Twilight lore is packed into the build, we’ve broken down everything we’ve spotted so far.

9 – “Clair de Lune is great”

Depending on how you look at it, Bella and Edward bonding over a love of classical music is either the most romantic or awkward part of the first Twilight movie. Debussy’s Clair de Lune is almost as old as Edward himself, so it’s perhaps no surprise that he likes music from his original era. In the LEGO set, Edward’s various records are displayed on a shelf, along with a Debussy composition pinned to his memo board.

8 – “Bella, we’re making Italiano for you”

Bella’s first time meeting the wider Cullen coven doesn’t go all that smoothly, with Rosalie shattering a salad bowl when Bella admits she already ate That very same bowl is included in the kitchen, which works either as a reference to her explosive temper or when the blonde vampire carves ‘Fido’ into a bowl to serve food to Jacob in a deleted scene in Breaking Dawn: Part One. Take your pick of some of Rosalie’s most chaotic moments.

7 – Bella’s love for her cactus

One of Bella’s first shots in Twilight is of her dramatically digging a cactus up from the Arizona soil to take with her to Washington, sad to be leaving the hot, dry climate behind. A brick-built cactus is included in the set, as well as a shot of Bella bringing the Cullens a gift cactus in the two-hour long animation based on 21354 Twilight: The Cullen House, available to watch on the LEGO Group’s YouTube channel.

6 – “It’s the American pastime”

The baseball scene is one of the most iconic scenes from the first movie. We don’t know whether it’s the leg kick from Alice, the epic soundtrack of Muse’s Supermassive Black Hole, or the general chaos of the Cullens using a thunderstorm to mask the sound of vampires playing, but it’s a true gem. Although it doesn’t take place in the house itself, there are references to the family’s love of baseball woven throughout the house, including Alice’s iconic blue cap.

5 – “We matriculate a lot”

The Cullens don’t try to hide their vampiric history in their own home, showing off their many graduation caps in a frame on the wall, highlighting their immortal lives. Not only does Bella notice them, but her parents also find it an odd sight to see in later movies.

4 – “Hold on tight, spider monkey”

It’s rare that you get to see Edward having fun but taking Bella on a whirlwind trip through the forest while clinging to his back is a brief moment where both Bella and Edward are smiling. With the now-infamous line, “hold on tight, spider monkey,” he whisks her away into the trees, a moment you can recreate thanks to a special transparent element that fixes Bella to Edward’s back.

3 – “This is the skin of a killer, Bella”

Back to moody Edward, you can display him at his shiniest with some special metallic printing on the alternate face print for Edward. Stand him out on a balcony and watch him shimmer. He’s the only vampire that has this print, although all of them have an alternate face with golden eyes, at least.

2 – Time for Bella’s lullaby

The shot of Edward playing the piano for Bella is returned to time and again in the Twilight series, usually when one or both of Bella and Edward is close to death and we need an emotional montage. Having decades to perfect your hobby means that Edward is good enough to compose a lullaby especially for Bella, which he plays, sings, or hums to her frequently throughout the franchise.

1 – “You nicknamed my daughter after the LOCH NESS MONSTER?!”

Saving arguably the best for last, you might have noticed that the half-vampire miracle baby that is Renesmee is not featured in the set. However, there is an homage to the baby – and her infamous nickname – with a print of a mountainous lake on the wall. This of course refers to the quote, “you nicknamed my daughter after the LOCH NESS MONSTER?!” Bella throws this at Jacob in Breaking Dawn: Part Two, when she realises he has imprinted on her infant daughter – but finds his nickname the most horrific part of the situation.

To enjoy all of these easter eggs and more, you can pre-order 21354 Twilight: The Cullen House right now for £189.99 in the UK, $219.99 in the US and €219.99 in Europe ahead of its release on February 1.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
