A non-exhaustive list of LEGO parts exclusive to one set

LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart gets his own moustache mold, entering a rare group of sets with one-off parts.

Making new molds is a costly and rare move for the LEGO Group, so designers will often build around the need for new parts with creative building techniques, recolours of old parts, and so on. Of course, that’s not to say that new parts are never made; it’s just that careful consideration is made for each one.

“We can’t make everything decorated. We can’t change every brick into every colour,” LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan Scott explained in a past interview with The Verge. “Otherwise the portfolio would just explode in complexity, so we have teams that manage the complexity level.”

To combat this issue, LEGO designers get a number of ‘frames’ to use for parts in a new colour, bringing an older piece back out of retirement, or creating an entirely new piece.

“If I have five products or 10 products coming out, I need to allocate where those frames go,” added Jordan.

In the case of 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, the decision was clearly made for him to get his very own moustache mold. However, this is not the only set where a piece appears in it and it alone.

Here’s a look at some of the instances over the years where LEGO pieces have only made it into one set – at least so far.

LEGO creatures big and small

Bringing fantastical creatures from the big screen into LEGO sets is certainly a challenge and it’s produced some unique and never-again-seen parts over the years, thanks to how particular they are. LEGO Avatar 75579 Payakan the Tulkun feature the enormous whale-like Tulkun, complete with its unique horned nose element.

Over in the world of Jurassic World, the brick-built dinosaurs often feature new molds, although the theme does tend to return to old favourites like the T.rex time and again. However, the latest wave saw the debut of a baby aquilops in 76972 Raptor Off-Road Escape. Being a pretty specific use case, it feels unlikely we’ll see the tiny dinosaur again soon in another set – although it feels like it would make an excellent accessory for a Aquilops Fan minifigure.

Made for the movies

LEGO Icons 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter review 36 1024x611

It seems fitting that the one and only LEGO set based on the Dune franchise has a unique element. 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter features a trans-black windshield element that hasn’t appeared in any other sets besides this one, even in another colour, at least at the time of writing. Its rotor blades also debuted in this set before appearing in gold in 71821 Cole’s Titan Dragon Mech.

The unique silhouette of the Dune ship probably makes it harder to fit other parts in. Plus, the massive Dune fan base might have helped the LEGO Group feel more confident in investing in this LEGO Icons set to make sure it hits the mark.

Too technical

4481 0000 xx 33 1

Going all the way back to 2003, LEGO Star Wars 4481 Hailfire Droid features two 21-cm wide gear wheels that have only ever been used for this specific droid. Looking at it, it’s hard to think of other parts that could have achieved the same effect – as well as think of other sets that might benefit from the two oversized gear wheels.

Hyper-specific – and never seen again

LEGO Super Mario 71397 Luigis Mansion Lab and Poltergust review 36 1024x683

It’s not always massive themes like LEGO Star Wars that reap the benefits of specific molds, though. A fairly low-impact set, LEGO Super Mario 71397 Lab and Poltergust – Expansion Set, got not one but two new molds, with the round red brick with four recessed studs and pin holes and the large figure legs, seen pictured above.

That demonstrates that there are cases where the LEGO Group will pull out all of the stops to make sure a set hits the mark, even for what many might class as a lower interest theme.

Surprisingly useful

While you can see why some of these hyper-specific molds weren’t used again, this round tile with two studs, used for Frozone in 66604 Disney Series 2, feels like it would be a handy piece for all CMF series, or at least for certain minifigure collectors. While modern stands for LEGO Collectible Minifigures are typically studded plates, the look of this rounded plate helps to angle characters in dynamic ways.

Thinking about modern Marvel CMF series where various characters can fly, having a studded round tile in the colour of their powers could have been a nice touch.

A gift for Luke Skywalker in honour of his UCS

LEGO Star Wars 75341 Lukes Landspeeder 7 1024x576

75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder is the Ultimate Collector Series of the vehicle – so naturally it needed its very own windshield. The new curved shape better fits the scale and proportions of the streamlined vehicle and takes the UCS build from good to great.

DREAMZzzing up a storm

As a new theme – and a very creative one at that – LEGO DREAMZzz benefitted from a lot of new recolours and molds, especially in its early days. Some favourites include the black and pink raven, as well as Mateo’s vest accessory that adds some extra flair to a theme already known for its impressive minifigures

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.

Polka Dot Man from The Lego Batman Movie first used Frozone’s round 4×4 plate/tile in 2017.
