Piece by Piece has a LEGO element that doesn’t exist

The LEGO Group’s upcoming Piece by Piece movie features a LEGO element that doesn’t exist, though it’s not the first time it has appeared.

Pharrell Williams’ minifigure in the Piece by Piece trailer matches the artist from head to toe, even including a piece for a rounded head instead of showing the exposed stud, as bald minifigures commonly feature. Piece by Piece is in cinemas starting on October 11.

Instead, Williams’ minifigure opts for the rounded head piece and this is an element that has never officially appeared in a LEGO set but has in other animated LEGO content. The LEGO episode of the Simpsons, titled ‘Brick Like Me’ has Homer equipped with the same non-existent element despite moulded heads existing for each member of the family.

Pharrell Williams has no such specialised piece and to capture the artist’s hairstyle, the rounded element is back, possibly because printing on the top of a standard minifigure head and the stud is unrealistic with the LEGO Group’s minifigure design and production.

Still, it’s odd to see the piece resurface and still not physically exist. There have been some close elements in the LEGO portfolio though including bald heads with hair at the side or a headband. Even closer is Egghead’s exclusive element from 2018’s 70920 Egghead Mech Food Fight, but it’s taller than the piece seen in the movie.

Piece by Piece showcases that the unique element is still on the LEGO Group’s mind but currently, there are no physical models or minifigures that use the rounded piece. Whether it will be used in the future may depend on whether the element can be removed from heads easily enough.

The other bald LEGO head pieces have features that allow them to be gripped more easily and removed from minifigure heads accordingly but the same doesn’t appear to be the case for the digital element seen in Piece by Piece and it may remain exclusive to the digital world due to this.

For now, you can look forward to watching Piece by Piece on October 11, 2024, in cinemas worldwide.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
