Rian Johnson doubles down on defence of Star Wars sequels

Filmmaker Rian Johnson has defended some controversial elements of the Star Wars sequel he worked on, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in a new interview.

Speaking to GQ, Johnson addressed the level of humour in The Last Jedi, something many fans were not keen. Despite humour playing a role in some of the more recent Star Wars TV shows, such as The Mandalorian and Andor, many agreed that there was simply too much of it and not in the right tone in The Last Jedi. However, Johnson disagreed.

“The slightly self-aware elements of gleeful humour are something that is part and parcel to Star Wars,” the filmmaker reasoned. “It’s not the whole thing. And we get very serious in the movie as well. I think that brazen balance of those two things is also something that’s part of Star Wars.”

Another common critique of the film is that it shook up Star Wars canon, largely with characters like Luke and Leia Skywalker not acting as fans believed they would. Others felt that the movie went too meta, filled with self-referential remarks and fan service that took away from the overall plot.

“I definitely didn’t approach the entire thing as a meta exercise because I think first and foremost, it has to be an honest expression of what the characters are actually going through,” said Johnson in response to such criticism. “It’s not very interesting to just think in a meta way about Star Wars.”
