Rumoured LEGO Speed Champions March 2025 Formula 1 sets need to innovate

Early rumours for LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 sets in March 2025 posit a similar range that will need to innovate, somehow.

Instagram user fateful_lego reports that of a record 15 LEGO Speed Champions models launching next year 10 will arrive in March. Childish_landino_chronicles further states that these will all depict Formula 1 cars at $26.99 apiece. As surmised in our initial report, the 10 teams in Formula 1 match up nicely with these 10 rumoured sets and this would be a suitable way to start the LEGO Formula 1 collection confirmed for 2025.

There’s no doubt though that 10 LEGO Formula 1 cars similar to both 76919 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Car and 76925 Aston Martin Safety Car & AMR23 at once would get old fast – pun intended. There may be some chance for the LEGO Speed Champions designers to innovate enough with these 10 rumoured sets to keep things fresh though. Keep in mind that while the existence of a LEGO Formula 1 partnership next year is confirmed, everything else is only a rumour at the time of writing.

A trip through history

In our original report on this rumour, we proposed that rather than depicting 10 Formula 1 cars in the same vein as 76919 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Car and 76925 Aston Martin Safety Car & AMR23 with different liveries, a trip through racing history may be more suitable. The design of Formula 1 cars has changed a lot since 1950, and the LEGO Formula 1 models have been similarly evolving since 1975

While the various LEGO Formula 1 builds from (nearly) the past 50 years offer a good representation of Formula 1 history, a modern take on the various eras of the sport could be a fitting celebration of racing. 10 LEGO Speed Champions sets would be more than enough to cover these and they would still be able to represent specific teams, based on which teams were active in which eras too.

Even half of the rumoured selection of 10 sets would be enough to cover Formula 1 history adequately, while diversifying what would otherwise be a drastically similar range of models. That said, there will be plenty of opportunities to represent the various Formula 1 eras in the 2025 collection as showcased by 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna this year, and there are other ways to diversify the rumoured range.

A customisable chassis

LEGO City 60396 Modified Race Cars 6

Childish_landino_chronicles’ rumour that all 10 sets will cost $26.99 suggests that each model will cover one standard car for all 10 teams in the sport. There’s still room for some creativity within these reported boundaries. It might be time for LEGO Speed Champions to take a page from LEGO City’sbook.

For the recent LEGO 2K Drive, LEGO City saw the release of three sets with removable accessories and parts to customise the appearance and functionality of each vehicle. This was part of a larger range of modular car models that introduced a creative mix of components.

LEGO Speed Champions prioritises details and display value over that of play but the theme could still use this modular system to its advantage. The colour scheme and livery of the various Formula 1 cars each year is the biggest difference between the team’s vehicles. Using LEGO City’s system, a singular chassis build used in all 10 sets with attachable livery parts would be a great way to diversify the range by allowing fans to mix and match components of the liveries to create a custom Formula 1 car.

As fun and creatively inspiring as this would be, it would also likely require every team partner to approve of this design decision, which may be where the biggest hurdle lies. Thankfully, there is another option, but it goes against part of what is rumoured.

Move beyond the cars, again

75883

Fateful_lego only reports that of 15 LEGO Speed Champions sets coming in 2025, 10 will be released in March. It’s childish_landino_chronicles that claims that these will all be $26.99 cars. Eschewing the second rumour partially, one way to mix up an array of 10 cars based on Formula 1 teams would be to save some of these models for later in the year.

Instead, a couple of these builds would be more beneficial as non-car models just as LEGO Speed Champions’ Formula 1 sets started with. 75913 F14 T & Scuderia Ferrari Truck and 75883 Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team are great sources of inspiration for how LEGO Speed Champions can move beyond cars in a limited range.

Launching 10 Formula 1 cars at the start of a new season in March 2025 makes sense logistically. Holding a couple of these models back until later in the year in favour of a different kind of model entirely isn’t a bad idea though. Deciding which teams’ builds are held back by a few months would be an important discussion to have with partners admittedly and would present another massive hurdle to overcome.

The biggest way that the 10 rumoured LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 sets can differentiate themselves from one another is simple. Minifigures of real drivers would make them collectable, even though the cars would look mostly the same. There’s a chance that the minifigures in the rumoured sets will instead be generic characters though, as we saw in 76919 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Car and 76925 Aston Martin Safety Car & AMR23 this year.

In any case, there are a few ways that the LEGO Speed Champions designers could approach these rumoured sets in the March 2025 wave, including doing nothing and just depicting 10 detailed cars with different liveries. While everything remains a rumour at the time of writing, we at least know for certain that a year of LEGO Formula 1 is coming in 2025.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
