The Secret Life of LEGO Bricks is finally arriving for backers

A crowdfunded book aimed at older LEGO fans appears to be materialising, and should provide rare insights into the LEGO Group’s most basic elements.

LEGO is increasingly being seen as an all-ages product, with recent releases like 10307 Eiffel Tower aimed squarely at older LEGO fans. That fandom is being accommodated in other ways, as crowdfunding project The Secret Life of LEGO Bricks makes clear.

Written by Blocks magazine editor Daniel Konstanski and funded via the Unbound website, The Secret Life of LEGO Bricks is a book which delves into the history of the LEGO brick itself. It’s an intriguing angle as while similar books have been available more widely, these tend to focus on LEGO sets and minifigures rather than their component elements. More than 300 photographs and 60,000 words are reportedly included, meaning you’re sure to get your money’s worth.

It’s also been a long time coming for LEGO fans, as the initial crowdfunding period began in late 2020. However, it hit its funding target in just 10 days – reflecting the high interest in the subject matter.

The book has been given an added layer of legitimacy thanks to official sanctioning by the LEGO Group itself, with access given to various LEGO employees as a result. Set designers, element designers, graphic designers, elements testers and plastics technicians have all been consulted during the book’s creation, making this book (we’re guessing) a treasure trove of rare insights into our favourite building toy.

Sadly, as a crowdfunded project, actually reading it may prove difficult for many LEGO fans. There’s no word yet of a wider publication, although given its niche subject matter and high cost that is perhaps to be expected. Still, keep an eye out for it if you’ve backed it; fellow Blocks magazine editor Graham Hancock certainly seems happy with what he’s received.
