Six retiring LEGO sets to prioritise during LEGO VIP Weekend

LEGO VIP Weekend is right around the corner, so if you’re trying to figure out what to buy, here are six retiring LEGO sets it’s absolutely worth prioritising.

For this weekend only, you’ll be able to claim double LEGO VIP points across absolutely everything at LEGO.com, while also earning multiple gifts-with-purchase (if you spend enough money). That makes it literally the best remaining chance to pick up the sets retiring this year before they’re gone for good, pending any last-minute discounts across Black Friday.

If you’ve got your heart set on any of those retiring products, though, we’d recommend not holding out for later deals: there’s probably an equally good chance that they’ll sell out for good before any such offers materialise. At the time of writing, all six of the following sets are in stock at LEGO.com in the UK and Europe, and – with any luck – will still be available when LEGO VIP Weekend gets underway on Saturday, November 19.

You can check out the full list of LEGO sets retiring in 2022 by clicking here, but keep reading for our picks of the sets worth prioritising across LEGO VIP Weekend.

6 – 75980 Attack on the Burrow

Theme: Harry Potter Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,047 Available: Now

When the LEGO Group switched up its approach to Hogwarts in 2021, most of its previous Wizarding World castle sets were instantly made redundant. But the models that went beyond the walls of Hogwarts are still totally worth your time, and that includes 75980 Attack on the Burrow, a satisfyingly solid rendition of the Weasleys’ wizarding home. It’s retiring this year, so grab it while you can.

5 – 76192 Avengers: Endgame Final Battle

Theme: Marvel Price: £79.99 / $69.99 / €89.99 Pieces: 527 Available: Now

Ignore the fact that we’ve had this cinematic climax in bricks twice already, and this is definitely your last chance to recreate the final showdown of the Infinity Saga in LEGO. Definitely. 76192 Avengers: Endgame Final Battle includes an enviable Marvel minifigure line-up – along with the first helmetless Thanos bigfig – and a 1972 Ford Ecoline van. Talk about super.

4 – 92176 NASA Apollo Saturn V

Theme: Ideas Price: £104.99 / $119.99 / €119.99 Pieces: 1,969 Available: Now

Another set that was technically already available once before, 92176 NASA Apollo Saturn V is a re-release of 2017’s sublime 21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V. From its knowing piece count (1,969, 1969, geddit?) to its ground-breaking construction techniques, this is one LEGO Ideas set everyone should build at least once. And now might just be your last chance to do so.

3 – 75315 Imperial Light Cruiser

Theme: Star Wars Price: £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99 Pieces: 1,336 Available: Now

Big, grey LEGO Star Wars sets don’t come along all that often. *checks notes* Oh, right. Well, anyway, you should still make a beeline for 75315 Imperial Light Cruiser, if only because grey LEGO Star Wars sets in this scale don’t come along all that often. Plus, you just know that Moff Gideon minifigure is going to skyrocket in price on the aftermarket the moment it retires.

2 – 42083 Bugatti Chiron

Theme: Technic Price: £319.99 / $349.99 / €369.99 Pieces: 3,599 Available: Now

The Set That Almost Retired But Then Didn’t – or 42083 Bugatti Chiron, as you probably know it – was originally supposed to depart shelves at the end of 2021, but a last-minute change saw it stick around into 2022. It’s definitely finally absolutely racing off into the sunset by the end of this year, though – at least, at the time of writing – so don’t miss the opportunity to grab the second Technic supercar before it’s too late.

1 – 76161 1989 Batwing

Theme: Batman Price: £174.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 Pieces: 2,363 Available: Now

LEGO DC is flagging spectacularly at the minute, with just one brand-new-for-2022 set arriving on shelves this year. That isn’t stopping the LEGO Group from retiring most of its current Bat-portfolio, though, and 76161 1989 Batwing is among the Bat-sets on the Bat-way out. (Did we say Bat enough yet?) Whip out the Bat-credit card and grab it during LEGO VIP Weekend to maximise your returns.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
