Space is the next frontier for LEGO Technic in 2024
Listings for LEGO Technic in 2024 report that the theme will be embracing space more than ever before next year, finally realising its potential.
Believe it or not, there’s only been three LEGO Technic sets based explicitly on space exploration, or including an alternate build focusing on the topic. That list includes 1988’s 8855 Prop Plane with an alternate spaceship build, 1996’s 8480 Space Shuttle and 2023’s 42158 NASA Mars Rover Perseverance
Considering the popularity of science fiction and recent missions into space, as well as the LEGO Group’s ongoing partnership with NASA, that’s surprising. It seems unlikely that it would be the final frontier though, simply the next stage in LEGO Technic’s journey.
However, 2024 listings for LEGO Technic suggest that this is all about to change. At least 42178 Surface Space Loader LT78, 42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit, 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover and 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81 appear to be based on science fiction or realistic space exploration, provided the listed names are accurate. That’s a full subtheme of LEGO Technic space sets, based on the listings.
There are a few other LEGO Technic 2024 set listings with no names that could also be based on space but for now, we can potentially expect at least four models in March next year.
That will more than double the current number of LEGO Technic space sets and finally realise the true potential of this industry and genre in the complex theme.
Based on the unconfirmed and translated names, we might be able to expect spaceships, another rover and even an orrery of the earth and the moon, as has been proposed on LEGO Ideas multiple times, but never approved.
These listings may not be entirely accurate, and you should take them with some caution. Still, there are potential reasons to be excited about LEGO Technic in 2024 as the theme could be heading to an unfamiliar frontier.
