Upgrade LEGO Speed Champions Back to the Future set for £5

LEGO Speed Champions 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future is missing just one feature, but adding it will cost just over £5.

It’s not hard to see why 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future has been one of the most popular new LEGO Speed Champions sets since it was released earlier this month, including the details that make this movie car iconic as well as two new minifigures. The only real downside to this smaller Back to the Future set compared to 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine is that the wheels can’t switch from drive to hover mode without taking some of the set apart.

While we noted in our 2025 review that this process is straightforward, it does require a small amount of rebuilding. Those who will be showcasing or using their copy of 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future often might prefer a more seamless method of turning the wheels from drive to hover mode.

Thankfully, firefabric on Rebrickable has found a way, and it only needs 39 additional elements. Their custom modification to 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future borrows the mechanism from another of their custom creations, discovering that it works on the official model seamlessly. They note that there are visual changes to the numpers, but those differences are hard to spot.

The mechanism works by using an array of Technic elements similar to the larger Back to the Future set, but scaled down appropriately. The parts needed for this modification consist of only 39 pieces, all of which can be found on Pick a Brick. Firefabric has provided an individual parts list for free, easily converted into a CSV file for easy upload on the LEGO Group’s online service.

Head to Pick a Brick, upload the file, and you’ll see that the parts cost £3.31. The instructions for this custom upgrade cost another €2, or around £1.73. That’s a total of only £5.04 for a considerable upgrade to an already amazing Speed Champions model.

77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future costs £22.99 / $27.99 / €27.99, though it is currently unavailable on the official online store. It is not retiring for some time, in case you want to grab the parts for firefabric’s custom upgrade in advance.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

This isn’t the “one feature that’s missing”; it’s that there’s no gull-wing doors on the vehicle. That’s the mod I’m interested in.

So yeah. Lego adds 6 euro handlingsfee and the postage.
But as they are very common pieces I’m certain I can find these in my own Lego pieces.
So it only costs me 2 euro to Firefabric.
Thanks for the this very informative article. And many thanks to Firefabric for the good idea and all the work into this.

Yeah lies. £10 on Legos website for delivery and service turns this “£5 hack” into nearly £15. May as well buy the set again and have one in hover and one in wheeled.

Not strictly true, Lego charges a service fee and delivery on top. Looking at £12.76 for the parts.

I did everything you said about converting the Back to the Future car and when it came to pay it wasn’t £5 it was nearly £13 so I didn’t do it.
