Why is LEGO doing the Trevi Fountain again 10 years later?

The Trevi Fountain is confirmed to get a LEGO Architecture remake later this year with 21062 Trevi Fountain, and now we know precisely why.

21062 Trevi Fountain launches on March 1 for £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99 with 1,880 pieces. This follows the first recreation of the Rome landmark from June 2014 with 731 elements for £39.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 (before price increases).

That’s more than triple the price and double the piece count, but the designer of the 2025 model has explained why revisiting this location at this increased scale was crucial and noted the support she received from the original model’s designer.

“This is something that we have built before in LEGO Architecture, but this time it’s coming back at a much larger scale,” shared designer Mary Wilson to Zusammengebaut. “It’s really giving us the chance to dive into some of those classic baroque details such as various columns and tiny pillars as well as including the first complete LEGO Architecture minifigure.”

“I’m assuming that not everybody has the previous model and that was created when the Architecture line looked a little bit different so there’s a different lens that is being used and with 21062 Trevi Fountain, we’ve got the scale, colour and the liberty to add a lot more details.

“Our previous model is beautiful and I love how it looks along with the previous Architecture collection, but the theme has grown and developed and I think this has grown along with it.”

It’s fair to say that LEGO Architecture has changed with the builds available today featuring much more detail than that of 2008, where every build was considerably more cubic and with more LEGO DNA. These days, the theme prioritises accuracy rather than a specific style, no matter what scale the sets are.

Another reason for bringing the Trevi Fountain back to the world of LEGO is simply due to the time difference and how long LEGO sets last before eventually retiring. 21020 Trevi Fountain was retired in 2016 – nine years before this new set leaving later LEGO enthusiasts with no chance to add a Trevi Fountain recreation to their collection without using the secondary market.

“It’s really nice being able to bring this back because not everyone has been a LEGO fan for over 10 years and the original set isn’t accessible to everyone – and in this way and at this size. When you’re building things out of any medium, but especially LEGO pieces, there are so many ways to create it – I think it would be a shame if we only did it once and we never touched the Trevi Fountain again.”

Wilson’s collaboration with the original designer of 21020 Trevi Fountain – Rok Zgalin Kobe – was detailed too and it’s clear that she received the seal of approval from the LEGO Architecture veteran.

“I worked really closely with the 21020 Trevi Fountain designer, Rok, and he’s so passionate about it – a great person to work with and to bounce any ideas off as well as with the rest of the team.

“When the original LEGO Trevi Fountain came out, Rok wanted to try it at a larger scale so even at the time, he knew there were so many beautiful details that would be perfectly captured if it was larger.

“Back then, he also made a version that was similar with two-stud-wide windows and when we revisited this we were able to dig that model up, start from there and see how people reacted to it, see how its proportions worked out. A lot of the new set stems from the windows and the window-heavy facade and all of it has to be proportional to each other.”

Not only was the original 21020 Trevi Fountain set used as a framework for 21062 Trevi Fountain, but so too was one of Kobe’s prototype builds to help shape the 2025 model. Remakes are certainly on the table for LEGO Architecture in the future and hopefully, they’ll have just as close a collaboration with the original designers moving forward.

21062 Trevi Fountain will be available from March 1 for £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99 with 1,880 pieces and pre-orders are open now in the UK and Europe.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
