The first widely-available 3D-printed LEGO piece is coming soon

A new kind of LEGO novelty is making its way to retail sets thanks to a 3D-printed piece in this year’s Winter Village model, but it’s not the first.

From light bricks to sound bricks and other electronic elements, the LEGO Group’s latest efforts to add some additional novelty to standard LEGO sets is the proper debut of 3D-printed elements, after a few introductory trials for the concept.

A 3D-printed train is one of the many elements in 10361 Holiday Express Train, featuring miniature moving parts of its own in an interesting divergence from the standard LEGO experience. This isn’t quite the first 3D-printed LEGO element (though it is the first in a normal set), and you can watch our latest YouTube video to find out everything you need to know about this element and what exactly 3D printing is.

The LEGO Group states that the miniature train in 10361 Holiday Express Train is the first in a widely available LEGO set, with all other previous 3D-printed pieces being part of a crowdfunding campaign, in a LEGO Inside Tour model and available for a short time at LEGO House’s store.

It’s an interesting move from the LEGO Group to take this previous concept and make it available to the masses, with more of the inner workings of 3D printing explained in the above video.

None of these previous pieces have been nearly as widely available as 10361 Holiday Express Train will be when it launches on October 1, for LEGO Insiders or October 4 for everyone else, with 956 pieces (including a 3D-printed train) for £109.99 / $129.99 / €119.99. It will be available alongside a massive new LEGO Christmas tree set, too.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
