World-first animatronic brings LEGO minifigure to life

With recent LEGO reveals, you might have forgotten the space land coming to US LEGOLAND parks, but its world-first animatronic is worth a look.

Last year, Merlin Entertainments announced a Classic Space-inspired land coming to LEGOLAND California and Florida later in 2026. As construction continues, members of the press have been offered an early look at the Galacticoaster in California, likely to be similar to that of Florida.

Theme Park Insider has shared a video full of Easter eggs within the coaster’s queue for Classic Space fans to revel in, but it’s the most advanced animatronic in LEGOLAND history that has caught our attention. While it’s not quite as innovative as the animatronics you’ll find at other major theme parks, it’s a huge innovation for LEGOLAND resorts, and it’s somewhat unsettling to see a giant minifigure moving so fluidly.

Converting a minifigure into an animatronic is probably much easier than that of a person with a more limited range of movement to consider. This first minifigure animatronic features moving arms, hands, legs and a spinning head with a projected face that can change expressions. It’s also able to move somewhat on its base, giving it much more character.

The space-inspired land will open in LEGOLAND California and Florida in early 2026, and considering the queue and animatronic, we’re curious to see just how detailed the ride itself will be.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

Not quite my idea of “Turn Lego Technic Man Into a Micro Robot” as the next tech foray for Lego, but it’s a start!
