What we need in a 10th-anniversary LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy set

Rumours for a new LEGO Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy set now report that it could be a 10th-anniversary set, offering plenty of potential.

Instagram user 1414falconfan reports that the rumoured 76286 Milano model may be named Guardians of the Galaxy 10th anniversary Milano instead, suggesting that we might have a unique anniversary Marvel model to look forward to.

Take all rumoured information with caution until officially confirmed but given the success of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the multiple LEGO sets they have each received, a 10th-anniversary model to mark a decade since the release of Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 makes some sense.

According to the rumour, 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy 10th anniversary Milano may be coming on August 1, 2024, (via exabrickslegogo_) for $169.99, but that’s all that is reported for the set now.

Looking at other recent anniversary models, there is some precedent for what could be included in such a set, especially at the rumoured price point. 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens, 80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary and 43227 Villain Icons may celebrate different anniversaries but they have one common trend between them.

Their array of exclusive minifigures with notable details and printing offers a premium experience that caters specifically to longtime enthusiasts, including unique versions of characters or their minifigure debuts.

For a Guardians of the Galaxy anniversary set, the ultimate minifigure for each of the main cast would be ideal – namely a green Drax with a bare chest showcasing his tattoos. The LEGO Group have an existing design for such a torso and there are green Drax minifigures (wearing a jumper and a new uniform) so it may just be a matter of combining the two.

Other LEGO anniversary sets include 76959 Triceratops Research and 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama. The LEGO Star Wars set is one of a few for the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi but it specifically includes a new and exclusive hair piece for Luke Skywalker. In a Guardians of the Galaxy anniversary build, this concept could be replicated with a fresh take on Star-Lord’s helmet with the exposed hair on top.

The Jurassic World 30th-anniversary set offers a model based on a scene previously not showcased with physical bricks, which may be harder to replicate with a model of the Milano. There may be a way around this as the rumoured set could include a reference to another scene separate from the Milano – a display stand for minifigures inspired by the Nova Corps lineup.

Beyond previous LEGO anniversary models, there are a few larger official takes on the Milano that were both missing something featured in 76193 The Guardians’ Ship (which is a model based on another ship from the films). While the original LEGO Milano featured a small interior, a build costing $169.99 could have the budget to expand on this interior space and at least have room for the full team inside.

Alternatively, the first LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy wave included 76020 Knowhere Escape Mission featuring a larger Groot figure and while the Groot minifigures represent the character in other stages of his life, a new buildable figure would call back to the 10-year-old set and depict Groot at a more appropriate scale.

There’s a lot of potential for a 10th-anniversary LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy set but at the time of writing, 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy 10th anniversary Milanois still only a rumour and all reported information should be taken with caution until we know more.

In the meantime, the new 76278 Rocket’s Warbird vs. Ronan has just been released featuring a new minifigure of the villain from the first film.
