12 LEGO Pick a Brick elements we’ll be ordering first

With dozens of LEGO elements uploaded to the Pick a Brick service from 2023 releases in a huge update, we picked out a few of our favourites.

There is page upon page of new LEGO pieces appearing on Pick a Brick, with more appearing all the time at the time of writing. While some are fairly standard pieces and recolours that will be useful for building but not overly exciting, there are some fun additions to the line-up that will be particularly exciting for those planning some creative custom builds.

In particular, if you’re wanting to dive into any underwater builds, LEGO Monkie Kid elements will help you, with aquatic creature heads and watery monster minifigure heads galore. What’s more, LEGO City has plenty of new animal elements, from sharks and dolphins to rabbits and squirrels.

Here’s a rundown of some other choice favourites of ours, as well as which set you could originally find them in.

12 – Mini Wig, LEGO City 60380 Downtown

As the LEGO Group expands the diversity of its minifigures, this also extends to the range and colour of the hairpieces on offer. From pink pigtails to these high ponies with bangs, you can have virtually any hairstyle on your minifigures now. The racoon-printed torso she’s sporting in 60380 Downtown has also appeared on Pick a Brick, if you want to complete the whole look.

11 – Orange Garbage Can, LEGO DUPLO 10987 Recycling Truck

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, as they say, and the wide range of garbage cans (named ‘box’ on Pick a Brick, but we all know what they are) means you can brighten up even the darkest of rubbish-filled alleys. Our favourite is the bright orange one, as seen in 10987 Recycling Truck, but you can truly pick your poison between orange, pink, purple, yellow, and more.

10 – Golden Armour Torso, LEGO Monkie Kid 80049 Dragon of the East Palace

The details on the gold-scaled armour from 80049 Dragon of the East Palace are truly impressive. The set itself costs £169.99, so this is a far more budget-friendly way to get your hands on some vibrant minifigure accessories and parts. Whether it’s this torso or the pink beard or water creature heads in the photo above, LEGO Monkie Kid is the gift that keeps on giving.

9 – Balloon Dog, LEGO Friends 41737 Beach Amusement Park

Ain’t no party without a balloon dog! Once again available in multiple colours, this trans-green balloon dog is straight out of 41737 Beach Amusement Park, capturing the spirit of some beach fun in an adorably tiny element.

8 – Grey Cardigan, LEGO Harry Potter 76415 The Battle of Hogwarts

LEGO Harry Potter is a treasure trove of woolen cardigans and jumpers and this one in particular is screaming Christmas to us. Originally worn by Neville, we’re already imagining it filling out some festive displays, giving your LEGO city populations the chance to wear something more fitting for the holiday season – and only for 83p a piece.

7 – Golden Marine Accessories, LEGO Monkie Kid 80049 Dragon of the East Palace

We did say that LEGO Monkie Kid was giving a lot with this huge Pick a Brick update – and we meant it. If you’re planning an underwater build, this bundle of golden accessories is the perfect kit to fill out your display. After all, just look at how effective the gold accents are alongside the blue and green colours in 80049 Dragon of the East Palace.

6 – Minifigure Face, LEGO 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure

When taken out of context, the classic minifigure smile is truly haunting. Builds aside, imagine the fun you could have by hiding a bunch of these around your home, for your friends or relatives to find that fixed grin staring back at them from unlikely spots. In all seriousness though, you could recreate other classic LEGO minifigures using this face, or anthropomorphise some existing builds. The world is your oyster.

5 – Mini Wig with Helmet, LEGO City 60366 Ski and Climbing Center

The weather’s getting colder and how better to show that than by kitting your minifigures out in warm winter clothing? While this is described as a helmet, you could also make this element work as a skull cap, and you don’t have to get rid of your minifigures’ hair in order for them to be safe as they embark on some winter sports.

4 – Turtle, LEGO City 60377 Explorer Diving Boat

You can now get a cute turtle in a brighter green, thanks to LEGO City 60377 Explorer Diving Boat. Incorporate him into some tropical builds – or make your very own LEGO zoo with all the other LEGO animals that were included in this Pick a Brick update (we’ve saved the best for last).

3 – Rubber Boat, LEGO City 60378 Arctic Explorer Ship

Take to the waves in this rubber boat, now available in a variety of colours. Kit out a beachscape or pose your minifigures in some aquatic races. As it’s on the larger side, this is one of the more expensive entries to Pick a Brick at a whopping £2.24.

2 – Minifigure Armour with Scabbard, LEGO NINJAGO 71799 NINJAGO City Markets

Once again available in multiple colours, this armour for a minifigure might be intended for LEGO NINJAGO 71799 NINJAGO City Markets, but it could easily work for any fantasy or superhero builds that you might be working on. Choose from a stealth-focused black or a more vibrant pink, green, or blue.

1 – Otter, LEGO Friends 41736 Sea Rescue Center

We promised we’d save the best for last and does it really get better than this little guy? Fresh from his examination at 41736 Sea Rescue Center, this otter can now feature in any of your builds for the grand old price of £1.37, once it’s available to buy via Pick a Brick.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
