I need 250 more Insiders points for LEGO Mario Kart Shell reward – here’s how I’m doing it
I’m 250 LEGO Insiders points shy of being able to redeem them for 40787 Spiny Shell, but I’ve still got time to bump up my balance.
It’s been a morning of highs and lows, seeing that 40787 Spiny Shell will be a LEGO Insiders Reward, rather than a gift-with-purchase, but then realising that I’m just a tiny bit short of the Insiders points to redeem it. However, if you’re in the same position as me, there’s still time to make up the gap, with the Mario Kart reward not going live until May 15.
Personally, I have 2,257 Insiders points – meaning I’m missing 243 points of the 2,500 points threshold for the reward. My first thought was that there is a wealth of tempting summer LEGO sets available to pre-order right now, but pre-orders won’t earn you points until the order is charged upon its release. That won’t be until after 40787 Shiny Shell becomes available on May 15 for most sets, although if you’ve been waiting to pre-order either LEGO Art 31216 Keith Haring – Dancing Figures or LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart (both of which release on May 15), points for those purchases should come through right on time.
It also occurred to me that I had some LEGO instruction booklets lying around, which are ripe for scanning to get 20 Insiders points a piece for each book. However, having just recently put my bins out and forgetting to scan a few, that only earned me 60 points in total. Note to self: scan before recycling next time.

It’s a safer bet to shop around LEGO sets that are already out and pick something that will earn you near enough the amount of points you need. In my case, that’s now a measly 183 points, so I won’t need to break the bank.
In the UK, you earn eight Insiders points for every pound you spend, but you can see how that breaks down in different regions here. That means I need to spend just over £20 to earn the balance I need, which helped me to get started.
A few recent releases in that price range are already on my wishlist, including 31136 Exotic Parrot and 10347 Petite Sunny Bouquet. You can see how many points you’ll earn for your purchase on the LEGO.com listing for that product – and in the case of 31136, I can already see it won’t earn me enough.

However, 10347 Petite Sunny Bouquet will earn me 200 points, which is more than enough for what I need. Considering I would probably have picked up this set at some point anyway, it feels like a good way to earn myself over the threshold to get my hands on 40787 Spiny Shell – a reward I really don’t want to miss out on.
If there aren’t any sets on your wishlist that fit the bill, then remember that Pick a Brick orders can also earn you points. When you add your Pick a Brick order to your bag, you’ll be able to see how many points you’re earning before checkout, to make sure you hit your target balance.
Happy shopping ahead of May 15, when 40787 Spiny Shell becomes available to redeem for 2,500 Insiders points!

wtf!! you throw away your instruction books…seriously?
I had the same reaction. I know you can get digital instructions now but seriously? Every single Lego instruction booklet I own is catalogued in a folder.
