LEGO 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi revealed

A LEGO Certified Store has published the first official images of LEGO 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi, a brand new 18+ Super Mario set unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con.

The 1,215-piece pixel art set is currently on display at the LEGO Group’s booth at SDCC, but has yet to appear on LEGO.com (unlike 75388 Jedi Bob’s Starfighter and 71047 Dungeons & Dragons). Brickset reports that Singaporean LEGO Certified Store The Brick Shop has published several images of the October release, however – though the listing now appears to have been removed.

71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi hooks its identity to a specific Mario video game in the same way as the recently-retired 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block, and serves up something completely different for the long-running Nintendo theme. The near-two-dimensional set depicts Mario riding atop Yoshi with a pixel art aesthetic that nods to the original Super Mario World game.

There’s also a crank in the base that apparently moves Yoshi’s legs, tail and tongue, lending a hint of interactivity to a set that likely isn’t compatible with the digital Mario, Luigi and Peach figures. It wouldn’t be the first LEGO Super Mario set to stand alone in that way: last year’s 71426 Piranha Plant likewise lacks interactivity with the wider course building theme.

71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi will apparently retail for $209.90 in Singapore when it launches on October 1, so we’re probably looking at a price tag of around £114.99 / $129.99 / €129.99 in the UK, US and Europe (based on the equivalent price for 43247 Young Simba the Lion King, which also retails for $209.90 in Singapore). We’ll hopefully find out for sure later today.
