LEGO NINJAGO 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle review

LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising is launching with two new 4+ models, but they aren’t exactly equals as 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle falls a bit short.

Unlike 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle, 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle doesn’t manage to fully live up to its potential and isn’t nearly as strong an introduction to the world of LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising.

That said, it’s still a fair example of what can be done with this age range for a reasonable price.

Like most other 4+ models, there’s unlikely to be any exclusivity with 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle. It should be available from all retailers on June 1, 2023, for £18.99 / $19.99 / €20.99.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle build —

As suggested in the name, there are two main components to 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle, Kai’s car and Ras’s bike. Kai’s car is the biggest of the two vehicles but that doesn’t necessarily make it any more interesting, as the dragon head at the front does little to improve the dull vehicle with only one feature for posing the tail at the back.

Also using the standard 4+ bike element, Ras’s bike has three wheels, which technically makes it more of a trike (for those playing along at home). It likewise doesn’t have too many points of interest, though it is good to add another Imperium vehicle to the infantry considering the rest of the range and its relatively few Imperium builds.

The printing makes up for the simple detailing, though that’s to be expected of a 4+ model (young kids can’t be relied upon to place stickers, after all). Both vehicles have room for only one minifigure, which is apt as there are only two in 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle. Also included is a small shrine with a crystal, which is really neither here nor there.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle characters —

With only two minifigures, 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle could have benefited from a third to guard the shrine or otherwise assist in the battle. Despite this, the selection is decent with Ras being a rarer character in the wave, so his inclusion in a smaller set does not go unappreciated.

The details on these minifigures are excellent, especially on Ras and it’s worth picking up the character in one of the new NINJAGO sets. 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle happens to be one of the cheapest too. As we’ve mentioned in other NINJAGO Dragons Rising reviews, it’s pretty hard to make out the teeth on his specialised head element and this could have been amended with additional printing.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle price —

At £18.99 / $19.99 / €20.99, 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle is competitively priced compared to other 4+ models from NINJAGO and beyond, but its lack of a third minifigure and uninteresting builds make it a far less tempting set than 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle.

Still, those wanting an introduction to the theme or the Ras minifigure should be satisfied with the model for the price.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle pros and cons —

It’s a shame that 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle falls short when stacked up against 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle as it’s an interesting premise for a 4+ set, but also one that has been done several times before.

Multi-vehicle models rely on notable vehicles to catch attention and unfortunately, that’s not quite the case with 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle as the car and bike feel destined to be forgotten as Dragons Rising begins.

A third minifigure could have helped fix this issue but when on a shelf next to 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle, it’s not likely to be the first pick for the price.

— Alternatives to LEGO NINJAGO 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle

NINJAGO is no stranger to 4+ models depicting vehicles and the retiring 71788 Lloyd’s Ninja Street Bike isn’t a bad option for half the price, should you need an alternative to 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle.

Otherwise, we’d suggest looking to LEGO Marvel instead as 10782 Hulk vs. Rhino Truck Showdown has equally interesting minifigures, two vehicles and a few side builds for slightly less money than the new NINJAGO set.
