LEGO NINJAGO 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs review

The student has become the master in this summer’s LEGO NINJAGO sets, as Lloyd embraces the role of teacher to pupil Arin in the mighty 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs.

A new era of NINJAGO is on the horizon and it’s interesting to see how the characters have grown. 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs exemplifies that growth with Lloyd finally taking on the role of master to new student Arin.

Mechs made out of other vehicles are nothing new, but a mech built to accommodate another mech is certainly an interesting direction to take the theme in – especially as it draws on character development for its inspiration.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs build —

71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs‘ build consists entirely of two mechs – a small one for Arin and a larger one for Lloyd. Arin’s mech is nothing special, though the dragon head used for the front fits with the motif of the new series. It has a good amount of movement in its limbs but it’s not too sturdy under its weight. Be gentle and it will hold, but the ankle joints tend to slip.

Arin’s mech is designed to latch on to Lloyd’s, hence the shade of green in its colour scheme, and the process of doing so is simple – though you might struggle at first to line the legs up correctly as they fit through a pair of loops. The most secure part of the connection is a single Technic pin that can get stuck in Lloyd’s mech, unfortunately.

Lloyd’s mech is much larger and even sports a pair of geta on its feet. This interesting design choice adds to the stability of the model, providing a larger base for it to stand on, but over a smaller surface area.

Due to the size and overall stability of Lloyd’s mech, its posing options are limited, mostly consisting of some movement in the arms. You can move the legs (though not with Arin’s mech attached) but you’ll find it absurdly hard to balance. The mech’s main weapon is suitably huge and we love the brick-built red tassel that can even move at the end of the staff.

The mech is undoubtedly more of a display piece and the pauldrons only emphasise that fact. They can restrict the arms a bit when not in use but they greatly add to the overall armoured look of the mech, with the wide head enclosing Lloyd inside. It’s pretty funny though that when attached, Lloyd is essentially using Arin as a human and mech shield. No one said being a student to the green ninja was easy.

There are five minifigures in 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs, weighted towards the Imperium as they’re likely going to need all the help they can get to take down the two mechs. Though they are unnamed, the Imperium Guard Commander and Imperium Claw General are arguably the best in this box, with both of the new and relatively uncommon helmets featured.

These new elements are unlike anything we’ve seen before, but are some especially cool bricks to add to your collection. The minifigure selection in 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs is one of the best in the entirety of the LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising wave thanks to the inclusion of these rarer bricks, despite the set’s size compared to 71796 Elemental Dragon vs. The Empress Mech and 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time.

The minifigures are by no means the main focus in 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs, but they might surprise you and will greatly help in building your Imperium army.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs price —

While we were building 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs – before its price was revealed – we estimated the cost exactly as it is, so we’d conclude that it’s priced as it should be in all regions. A lower price would be great but considering the size of the mechs, even when detached from each other and the minifigures, there’s a lot to love in this new LEGO NINJAGO set.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs pros and cons —

For veteran fans of NINJAGO, it’s heartwarming to see official confirmation that Lloyd is finally a master and a mech to celebrate this landmark achievement only seems appropriate. 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs is by no means a must-have in the Dragons Rising wave, but those with a fondness for the theme and an appreciation for mechs will likely be enamoured by this set.

71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs executes the idea of a combined mech well, but both individual mechs remain interesting enough. We only wish that the larger mech could be posed more easily, as it is severely restricted in its movement – but it at least looks good on display.

NINJAGO has plenty of mechs to pick from should you need an alternative to 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs. 71765 Ninja Ultra Combo Mech combines four vehicles into one giant mech, similar to the new set.

Otherwise, both 71738 Zane’s Titan Mech Battle and 71785 Jay’s Titan Mech are similar in price and have an equally interesting array of minifigures to collect.
