LEGO NINJAGO 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle review

As far as 4+ sets go, LEGO NINJAGO 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle is one of the better picks, overflowing with play potential.

The LEGO Group’s range of 4+ models offers simplistic builds designed for younger builders, making them a hard sell for older fans. Despite this, there are still some aspects to enjoy in 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle, keeping in mind the intended audience.

Though it’s not likely to draw your eye over any of the other Dragons Rising sets, 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle offers an excellent introduction to the theme and its new generation.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle build —

Most of the bricks in 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle go towards the dragon, a common trend in the new NINJAGO models. As is to be expected from a 4+ creation, the dragon here is much simpler than that of any other set. Despite this, it’s an appealing design with many posing options, and the translucent wings remind us of simpler times in NINJAGO.

There’s room for one minifigure, or two at a stretch, on its back – meaning both Nya and Arin can ride into battle atop the dragon. The single specialised head element adds some electric personality to the beast and it’s interesting to see the raptor legs reused, with their shaping majorly contrasting from the rest of the build.

The flying Imperium vehicle also provided is the biggest and best of all similar vehicles in the NINJAGO Dragons Rising sets, with a printed piece and a pair of huge engines doing a far better job at selling the aerial nature of the craft than the non-4+ iterations in 71793 Heatwave Transforming Lava Dragon and 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer.

The rest of the set is populated by mostly forgettable side builds, including a cave, fire and disc launcher. These add some substance and play options to 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle but are far from the most interesting parts of the model.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle characters —

Three minifigures and Baby Riyu are included in 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle, and it’s a great selection of characters otherwise scattered across the larger Dragons Rising sets. Picking up 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle nets you the new Imperium helmet and armour, the ninja mask and hood and Arin’s horned hood in one easy package.

While these minifigures are mainly included to satisfy younger NINJAGO enthusiasts and enhance the play value of the model, those missing Nya, Arin or the Imperium Claw General will be served well by 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle.

The detail in these minifigures is impressive for a 4+ set and it’s great to see that the designs haven’t been toned down, despite the intended audience and how much they are likely to care about these aspects. That’s on par with the LEGO Group’s recent 4+ sets, but the continuation of that approach is welcome.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle price —

It’s shocking to see a 4+ set with this much content and potential for play offered for just £26.99 / $34.99 / €31.99, especially since it’s only four pieces off 71759 Ninja Dragon Temple at £39.99 / $44.99 / €44.99. 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle is extremely affordable and exceptionally well-priced for a 4+ model, making it a tempting option for those missing a few NINJAGO minifigures.

— LEGO NINJAGO 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle pros and cons —

There’s no doubt that 4+ sets don’t appeal to everyone and they aren’t designed to. Some may be instantly uninterested in 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle looking at the simple build. However, first impressions can be deceiving as there’s plenty to enjoy in this 4+ NINJAGO model.

71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle has astounding value given how high the price-per-part ratios can be with 4+ sets, despite that not always being the best factor to judge a model by. It’s essentially a Dragons Rising starter kit for anyone wanting a taste of the theme and the new series, but without delving into something too complicated or spending too much.

While 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle was designed with small hands in mind, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some larger hands picking this set up…

— Alternatives to LEGO NINJAGO 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle

NINJAGO’s range of 4+ sets has more dragon-centric models to pick from, though both represent worse value than 71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle. As mentioned earlier in the review, 71759 Ninja Dragon Temple is the best alternative to the Dragons Rising creation and it also includes Nya. It’s available now for £39.99 / $44.99 / €44.99.

Otherwise, the retired 71701 Kai’s Fire Dragon was once available for £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99, though that price may have changed on the secondary marketplace.
