LEGO Star Wars 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser review

LEGO Star Wars 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser is an impressively large Clone Wars build that manages to justify its exorbitant price tag.

75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser is a fantastic evolution of the large-scale LEGO Star Destroyer formula. While Star Wars prequels and Clone Wars fans will get a particular kick out of the set, this is a tremendously impressive build that mostly manages to hold its own weight without the fragility that has been seen from similar builds in the past.

No LEGO set is perfect. The LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series models may be lauded for their large size and high piece count, but the imposing nature of these sets often come with certain limitations.

The challenge with creating a UCS version of the Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith Venator-Class Star Destroyer was always going to be mitigating the problems created by this size. With a ship this big, it’s hard for the build process not to feel tedious, and it’s difficult for the finished set to feel solid and balanced without seeming to groan under its own weight.

And yet: LEGO Star Wars 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser is one model that absolutely manages to avoid the pitfalls of fragility and tedium that can sometimes occur with UCS sets. The ship is a surprisingly easy build, with the vast majority of the experience feeling tremendously straightforward. There are a few moments when a dense layer of greebling or a tricky subassembly attachment can slow the process down, but for the most part, this is one UCS set that feels like a genuinely breezy experience.

This is in part because of the construction of the ship itself. A core Technic frame is assembled first to give the ship its structure, followed by the assembly of eight separate quadrants of the vessel, all collections of small plates that fit together to create the ship’s arrowhead shape.

The building process, then, primarily involves the stacking of these plates on top of each other, making for a model that is several layers thick, with minimal detail on the outer hull beyond a few turrets and some red markings.

It’s not always easy to zone out while putting together a UCS set, but 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser is a particularly low-effort, relaxing experience. The biggest challenge, aside from figuring out a few awkward Technic connections, is mustering the stamina to keep going to the end.

Perhaps because of the boxy, low-detail design of the ship, when assembled, 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser is a surprisingly sturdy build. Where a previous UCS set at a similar size, 75252 Imperial Star Destroyer, feels a little more flimsy and fragile, this latest offering is built to last.

This is in part thanks to the design of the set as a single, large build. Unlike the Imperial Star Destroyer, 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser has its stand built directly into the set, so there’s no danger of it slipping off its perch. There aren’t a lot of little details on the outer hull to worry about, and the whole set ends up feeling like a big, solid, unusually sturdy starship.

The multiple layers of tiles do make this a rather hefty set, and if there’s one part of the design that really shows the ship straining to take its own weight, it’s the gorgeous engines, which while beautiful, do tend to sag after a while.

Unlike other large UCS sets such as 75313 AT-AT or 75331 The Razor Crest, this set doesn’t have any internal areas to explore, and there are no hidden secrets to the build. 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser does exactly what it says on the box, without additional bells or whistles, which for some may be a let down, but it certainly helps the ship to feel like an oddly uncomplicated build for a set of this size.

75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser comes with two minifigures: Admiral Yularen and Captain Rex, two fan-favourites from the Clone Wars animated series.

Yularen, while basic, is perfectly serviceable. The minifigure sports a grey military uniform with dual-moulded legs, but no arm or leg printing. He has two different faces printed on his head, so can be posed with either a stoic expression, or one that bares a few more teeth in a somewhat sardonic manner.

These two faces don’t feature a wide range of emotions, but they do fit both the character and the archetype, so even those builders who aren’t overly familiar with the Clone Wars cartoon will recognise the kind of character that Yularen represents.

The more interesting minifigure by far is Captain Rex, who comes complete with a fabric shoulder pauldron. Rex features both leg and arm printing of high detail; his armour’s blue paint scheme is chipped and rough, and is covered with tally marks. Rex features one of the most detailed Clone Trooper helmet print jobs in recent years, as even the weld lines on his custom helmet are visible.

If there’s a downside to the minifigure, it’s the lack of a belt spat or kama. Rex’s skirt is represented by some printing on his legs, but for many LEGO Star Wars fans, a fabric kama would have been preferable, especially given the set’s price point.

75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser costs £559.99 in the UK, $649.99 in the US and €649.99 in the EU. To put things bluntly, this is not a cheap set, and many LEGO Star Wars fans will unfortunately feel unable to justify this price tag.

For those who do part with this much cash, the set certainly does its best to justify that high cost. This is a big set when constructed, and will make for an excellent display piece for anyone with the money – and the space – required to purchase and make best use of it.

Anyone looking to spend a large amount of money on a particularly sizeable LEGO Star Wars set may wish to consider 75331 The Razor Crest, which costs a little less but comes with a detailed interior to complement its exterior.

Another option for those looking for a large LEGO Star Wars set would be 75313 AT-AT, which is more detailed than 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser and features more parts, but doesn’t take up quite as much space due to its ironically smaller footprint.
