LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter review

LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter is the latest mini-build you cannot ignore because of that included minifigure.

Coming in at £11.99 / $12.99 / €12.99 and 99 pieces, 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter is the smallest and cheapest offering from the mini summer wave of releases by LEGO Star Wars, but that doesn’t mean anyone is going to overlook it.

— Where to buy LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter —

LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter releases on June 1 at LEGO.com, in LEGO Stores and presumably a number of third-party retailers, starting with Disney Store.

— LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter build —

LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter is hardly original – Microfighters have been going for a full decade, as it happens, and 75391 will be the third Y-wing in the series, following 2017’s yellow 75162 Y-wing Microfighter and 2020’s red 75263 Resistance Y-wing Microfighter.

Captain Rex’s Y-wing is very similar in build to both of those, whether you remember building either of the previous two, but at least adds a third colour to the collection – now all three primary colours are represented in Y-wing Microfighters.

The blue version here helps to represent the BTL Y-wing Starfighter that Captain Rex used when he and Ahsoka Tano escaped the Venator-class Star Destroyer Tribunal during Order 66, as seen in the seventh season of The Clone Wars.

It’s a fairly recent but pretty iconic version of the starfighter and one that is ideal for turning into a LEGO set, just not ideally at this scale. Microfighters are what they are and very little beyond that, offering up miniaturised versions of recognisable ships, complete with a minifigure to pilot them in an almost cartoonish way.

75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter doesn’t venture from this premise either – you know what you are getting and if you are under the age of eight then it’s brilliant because it’s swooshable, it has enough details to be recognisable as the ship from the show, it’s handheld and you can take it around with you, plus your minifigure can sit inside it and fire off the missiles. If you happen to be older than that eight, though, then you’re here pretty much just for the minifigure.

And LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter certainly delivers a minifigure, offering up Captain Rex in all his glory complete with pauldron, printed legs, printed arms and very detailed and uniquely-printed helmet. This is the same version of the minifigure that debuted in last October’s 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser, which means that the unique head print is also included here.

As far as Microfighters go, the main appeal is usually the minifigure, and in this case 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter well and truly delivers one that will pull in a lot of us.

— LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter price —

LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter is priced at £11.99 / $12.99 / €12.99 and frankly that’s a far more affordable way to pick up a highly-detailed and long-awaited Captain Rex minifigure, regardless of price-per-piece value or play experience that the Microfighter itself may or may not represent.

— LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter pros and cons —

LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter doesn’t venture from the path well-trodden by many predecessors. It makes for a formulaic and quite dull mini build that for collectors at least keeps things consistent, and it offers up one of the sub-theme’s most detailed and highly sought-after minifigures in a much more affordable set.

— Alternatives to LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter —

LEGO Star Wars 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter will sit on shelves alongside two pretty good Microfighters in the form of 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter and 75363 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter Microfighter. As far as a trio of Microfighters go, you can’t do much better than this.
