Five features we’re looking forward to exploring in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

With the next generation of gaming comes a new era for LEGO games, starting with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and all its new features from updated mechanics to explorable planets.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is apparently right around the corner, and even though we’ve not heard much about the new video game set in a galaxy far, far away, there are plenty of features we do know about that we can’t help but be excited for.

Over 800 characters will be included in the title, with 300 of them being playable, and from the trailers released so far, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga looks to be changing the game (excuse the pun) when it comes to LEGO video games, so here are five features we can’t wait to explore.

5 – More blockbusters to experience

So far in the history of LEGO Star Wars games, episodes one to seven of the iconic franchise has been transformed with TT Games’ classic blend of humour of bricks, but The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker have yet to receive the same treatment, something that will change in this new title.

Although the films may have been divisive for Star Wars fans, we can’t wait to see some of their action sequences and locations realised in a LEGO game, especially the battle on Crait, which could call back to large-scale battles on Hoth that were present in previous games.

4 – All-new gameplay mechanics to explore

From the two trailers revealed so far, we can see that LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will be introducing at least a few gameplay mechanics, from over-the-shoulder blaster combat to action-packed fight sequences. And those are just from the original trailer, who knows what else has been added in the months of development time?

An interview in the Official PlayStation Magazine has announced that one of the new gameplay features will be an updated upgrade and quest system, with the latter promising to be more in-depth than before. In the past, characters in LEGO games haven’t been much more than tools to finish the level, but maybe this time they’ll be closer to customisable characters.

3 – A new era of LEGO open worlds

At least 23 planets will be making up the galaxy far, far away in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and we’ve already listed a few locations we’d love to see. From Coruscant to Geonosis, there’s plenty of places for TT Games to pick from but making sure that these worlds are fun to explore is just as important as choosing them.

The updated quest system will no doubt flesh these planets out with features and things to do, but from what we can see thanks to screenshots and trailers, the open worlds in this LEGO game look to be different than any others before, from the way they look to the characters than inhabit them.

2 – Next-generation graphics on LEGO bricks

The delays that this LEGO game has endured have made the wait even more difficult, but it has meant that the game will be able to launch on next-generation consoles, taking advantage of their improved technology.

While it won’t be utilising many of the new features from the next-gen consoles, we can see from screenshots that the digital bricks will be integrated into the game worlds more than ever. For example, on colder planets such as Hoth, the snow will stick to the bricks of AT-ATs, Snowspeeders and other LEGO models. The plastic pieces are now a fully-fledged part of the video game worlds.

1 – More LEGO bricks than ever before

When it comes to LEGO games, there’s one key element that can never be left out, the models and structures made from the iconic plastic pieces, and it seems that LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will include more than ever before.

In a report detailing the behind-closed-doors demo from Kotaku, the person running the demo mentioned that a Star Destroyer flying out of hyperspace was made of around 18,000,000 pieces, but don’t expect a UCS set of that size any time soon. Later in the report, it’s mentioned that James McLoughlin revealed that every spaceship interior will be made entirely from bricks, including that of the Death Star.
