A Minecraft Movie box office paves way for more LEGO sets

The first Minecraft movie has had astounding success at the box office already, leaving the LEGO Group with a lucrative opportunity.

The BBC states that A Minecraft Movie estimated $300m during its opening weekend, granting it the title of the biggest opening ever for a video game movie, beating the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario.

The budget for this film is claimed to be around $150 million, and including likely marketing costs, A Minecraft Movie may be profitable after just one weekend. Whether you liked the film or not, at this point, a sequel would be a smart financial move by Warner Bros. Entertainment.

Unlike the Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario movies, the LEGO Group released a pair of tie-in movie sets – 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring and 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack – with minifigures of the cast and builds based on key moments in the film.

Whether A Minecraft Movie sequel is on the way or not, the box office success of the film so far presents the LEGO Group with an opportunity to further capitalise on the film in the same way that they do with the most successful Marvel movies.

Treating A Minecraft Movie the same way as LEGO Marvel does The Infinity Saga, consistently returning to the film to recreate new moments and characters before the next major release, is one path for the LEGO Group to take with Minecraft following the massive success.

Alternatively, the inevitable sequel to A Minecraft Movie (or whatever the next Minecraft film will be) is ideal fodder for future LEGO Minecraft sets now, assuming that the success of the film reflects onto the two new sets. Both 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring and 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack are available now with the full cast of the film as normal minifigures.
