Are LEGO Space Collectible Minifigures nostalgic enough?

The newly-revealed LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71046 Series 26 contains hints of nostalgia, but are they enough to satiate fans of retro space subthemes?

Unveiled by an online retailer this week, 71046 Series 26 serves up 12 brand new minifigures inspired by classic LEGO space themes, wider sci-fi tropes and general space exploration. But when initial rumours of a space-themed Collectible Minifigures series first emerged, immediate assumptions were that we’d be getting an entire range of characters devoted to the LEGO Group’s wide variety of classic LEGO Space factions.

So, the question on everyone’s lips now is surely: is this series nostalgic enough? It’s certainly the question we’re knocking around in our latest YouTube video, and especially with one eye on the fact that the LEGO Group has wholeheartedly embraced nostalgia over the past few years, and in doing so has curated a certain set of expectations among some corners of the community.

Hit play below to take a deep dive into this subject with Matthew, and stick around to hear what this series is missing for him. Viewers of a certain vintage will surely empathise with his frustrations around the absence of one very particular LEGO Space subtheme…

71046 Series 26 is expected to arrive on May 1, 2024, presumably in the same cardboard boxes as 71039 Marvel Series 2 and 71045 Series 25. Fingers crossed that means the return of the data matrix codes, which will allow the Brick Search app to identify the contents of each and every box.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

Personally I would have liked this minifigures series to be made up entirely of Classic Space Astronauts in a variety of new colours and for each to come with a Baby Astronaut figure.
The brown one from series 24 was great but not sure brown was top of everyone’s colour choice.
