As one LEGO Avatar retires, another LEGO Avatar rises

One LEGO Avatar may be on the cusp of total retirement, but another LEGO Avatar now has a fresh shot at getting to shelves thanks to LEGO Ideas.

The blue-skinned, long-limbed minifigures, flora, fauna and military vehicles that make up the LEGO sets based on James Cameron’s box office-busting Avatar series are all slated to retire by the end of July, while subsequent product slots are rumoured to be hooked to LEGO Despicable Me 4. That all spells the end of the line for LEGO Avatar as we know it: but Yarrostudios’ first-ever LEGO Ideas project could see the dawn of a very different LEGO Avatar.

That’s in the form of Appa the Sky Bison, from the classic animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The enormous beast is rendered from more than 1,500 pieces, and Yarrostudios is pitching it as an 18+ model (which applies to all LEGO Ideas sets anyway) thanks to its ‘intricate building techniques and unique bricks that will challenge and entertain builders’.

“[Appa’s] legs are posable, allowing him to be displayed in both flying and standing positions,” the builder explains. “His head and tail are also movable, enabling fans to capture various expressions and poses. Appa’s saddle is removable, providing builders with the option to display him with or without it. This flexibility allows fans to truly immerse themselves in the world of Avatar and engage in imaginative play.”

This isn’t the first time the show has cracked the 10K club: Minibrick Productions (the fan designer behind 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera) took a similar project to the second 2020 review, while a much larger build (which also included a Fire Nation ship) reached the third 2021 review. Both of those projects were ultimately rejected, but whether now is the right time for it to come to life – without another Avatar series on shelves to confuse casual consumers – is up to the LEGO Ideas team.

Appa the Sky Bison joins Spirited Away in the first 2024 review, which is already off to a flying start. We’ll find out the results of this review towards the back end of this year, while the results of the second 2023 review should drop in the next month or two.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
