Here’s the best LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 sets for custom building

Now that custom builders have had plenty of time with the LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 wave, here are the ones with the most and best alternate builds.

LEGO Speed Champions alternate builders are a whole world of building all of their own, with the small piece counts adding a rewarding challenge to the art of custom building. Nearly four months on from the release of the LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 wave, we checked Rebrickable to see which of the 10 sets is the best for custom models.

In terms of quantity, 77243 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 comes out on top, with seven alternate builds of the set. That includes a retro Formula 1 car version, as well as some quirky vehicles that fit the Red Bull branding. With the energy drinks company often putting on wild stunts, the F-zero could easily be straight out of one of their adrenaline-chasing videos.

77246 Visa Cash App RB VCARB 01 comes just behind with six alternate builds. The mixed colour liveries could be what makes these sets more tempting to custom builders, with a greater variety of colours in the sets than 77242 Ferrari SF-24, for example.

Quantity doesn’t always mean quality, however. One of the most creative custom builds is anderson_brick_art’s Cyber Speed Champions – Fer-rari. Admittedly, you’ll also need LEGO DREAMZzz 71489 Cooper’s Gaming Controller Jet to pull it off, but that’s a relatively low investment to take the LEGO Speed Champions car into an dystopian reality.

If you’re looking for a lot of different builds from just one or two sets, the RB cars, 77243 and 77246 are your safest bets. However, some of the Ferrari builds pull off impressive new looks with the red livery. You can see all the LEGO Speed Champions alternate builds on Rebrickable here.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
