New rules have been announced for Series 7 of the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program, prohibiting subject matter covered in two official models.
The LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 7 webinar has revealed two new guidelines that budding fan designers will need to be aware of when designing their hopeful future sets. These include avoiding depicting fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. Named examples include refineries, factory chimneys, fuel storage and gas stations.
The guidelines state that it is acceptable to showcase historical methods of transportation that rely on fossil fuels, including steam trains which have two sets either on the way or released previously. It's also acceptable to depict real-world vehicles that use fossil fuels but in a fictional setting, they should use sustainable fuels instead.
You'll also need to avoid showing any destruction of natural environments for human benefit including deforestation, logging, mining, land development and monoculture plantations. This follows the removal of modular buildings and builds belonging to an existing collection or theme for Series 6, though enthusiasts found a way to build around some of those rules.
With these new guidelines, a pair of approved builds – one of which has already been released under a previous program – may not have been eligible should they have been submitted to the program now. These are 910011 1950s Diner and the upcoming Gold Mine Expedition, which include a fuel pump and a large mine respectively.
Under the context of historical subject matter, they may have been allowed but it's not certain that they wouldn't have been disapproved or at least amended to remove the offending topics where possible.
These additions help to clarify what is eligible for the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program going forward and despite these restrictions, there's still plenty you can cover as you can see by what has been approved for a model.
