Colourful LEGO City 2024 astronauts may be referencing more than Classic Space

The LEGO City 2024 space sets feature colourful astronauts, but the models suggest that this could be a reference to more than just Classic Space.

There’s little doubt that the astronauts in colourful spacesuits in the new LEGO City 2024 space sets are intended as an Easter egg for Classic Space – the logo even appears in several sets. However, the models in this upcoming range are reminiscent of another space-centric theme filled with colour-coded astronauts.

Looking specifically at 60428 Space Construction Mech, 60432 Command Rover and Crane Loader and 60430 Interstellar Spaceship, the 2013 Galaxy Squad theme may well have been an inspiration for at least some of the LEGO City 2024 space sets.

60428 Space Construction Mech features an orange astronaut in a mech and while its cockpit can’t separate to be a flying vehicle, this is similar to 70707 CLS-89 Eradicator Mech’s colour scheme and concept.

Similarly, 60430 Interstellar Spaceship‘s sleek design with a value astronaut may remind you of 70701 Swarm Interceptor – as well as the shaping of 76832 XL-15 Spaceship. 60432 Command Rover and Crane Loader‘s sizable rover with a separate module could be calling back to 70704 Vermin Vaporizer too.

As well as the astronauts, the presence of green aliens in the LEGO City 2024 space sets may be more evidence that the upcoming range is paying homage to more than the most obvious space theme from LEGO history.

These three sets and many more launch on January 1, 2024, and you can see what else is coming next month by clicking here.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
