Comparing two generations of massive LEGO Monkie Kid mechs

The upcoming 80045 Monkey King Ultra Mech is a new version of one of the first LEGO Monkie Kid sets, but with changes to spot after three years.

In 2020, 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech was released to kickstart the LEGO Group’s latest theme exploring the story of the Journey to the West, but with a modern touch including a giant red and gold mech.

Now, in 2023 following the upcoming retirement (according to our sources) of 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech, a new version named 80045 Monkey King Ultra Mech and the two have plenty of comparisons to discover:

4 – A more detailed staff

The staff in 80045 Monkey King Ultra Mech is bigger than in 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech, with extra detailing on the tips of the giant weapon too. It also appears to be held in a different way, with Technic axles rather than ball joints.

3 – The cockpit

While in 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech, Monkie Kid had to stare out a window barely bigger than his head to see the action, the transition from warrior to ultra has enlarged the viewscreen in a generally more angular design.

2 – More foil detailing

While the two strands coming off the head used LEGO bricks in 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech, in 80045 Monkey King Ultra Mech, they’ve switched to a foil material instead, which allows for extra details and integrates a few pieces to allow for a slight bend in the material too.

1 – An additional jet

The jetpack and arm blades on 80045 Monkey King Ultra Mech can be detached to form a jet in case anything happens to the rest of the mech – a new feature not present in the 2020 vehicle.
